DIY Snorkel pics

Postby damo667 » Sun Jun 26, 2011 12:52 pm

Hey guys I see there is a lot of people making DIY Snorkels and some of them look as good if not better then bought ones and cost quite a bit less...
I was just wondering if anyone had some pics of the DIY job inside of the hood as that seems to be the tricky bit ie: moving the fuse box, connecting to the airbox etc.. etc...
Cheers

Ok this is a airflow snorkle but realy there isnt much choice on how to do the inside. Only other way I have seen was on lewises truck where he used an aftermarket airbox with built in pod. Not sure on brand. He also had issues with it popping off but he solved that now

Yeah no the fuse box is on the passenger side on mine.. must be a change on the newer models..
Thanks Geeves
It doesn't look so bad to do it looks like you've moved the fuse box back a bit and moved the power steering reservoir out a bit and presumably rustled together a couple of DIY brackets for both..
Have you turned the base of the airbox round so to use the original intake?
These are things you'd have to do to fit a shop snorkel so I'm thinking make my own is the way to go..
The missus is just trying to stop my using downpipe.. she says it'll look cheap.. I said thats cause it will be haha..

its all made out of drive shafts and a turbo intake elbow on to the air cleaner, which i have turned a bit..I made a tight turn and went through the guard with the drive shaft metal..So all one piece of pipe really..

heres my set up, standard downpipe under the bonnet, going to h/d pvc, 80mm i think, it connects to the airbox with a 90 degree reducer silicone bend, watertite and works a treat

Like most of the other examples I was keen to use what I had or could easily get.

K&N sealed filter off my old VR4, some dented 4" SS a mate welded up for me - i just had to buy the silicon bends. Had some issues with the pod jumping out of the silicon bend but have it well jammed in and it cant come back out as its up against the fuel filter so its good now.

Basically that is correct except for the air cleaner. This had the original inlet welded up and a new outlet fabricated where it is now. This was all beyond my abilities at the time so I paid 2 kings ransoms for someone else to do it. It was even worse than that as the power steer box died the day before it was booked in.

its a simota pod filter from bnt, $60 i think and the and adapter that i think i got from bnt aswell, had holes already in it and a rubber seal that is sandwitchd between the adaptor and airbox lid, all i had to do was drill the holes in the lid and bolt it up, fits real nice in the airbox 2 and yes it breaths allot better than factory filter

Re: DIY Snorkel pics

Postby damo667 » Sat Jul 02, 2011 9:32 am

Well I've got a plan together..
I'm going to disconnect the original pipe that routes round behind the radiator and make a waterproof cap for the intake I dont want to get rid of it completely as there seems to be a breather pipe running into it which I haven't got round to identifying yet..
Then I'm going to cut a hole in the other side for my new intake.
Then I'll get a mate to weld a short length of pipe into it which I can hose clip a (75mm internal diameter) flexible pipe to.
The choice now is to either move the steering reservoir and go through the usual spot or try to weave the flexible pipe round everything and go through the wing further up..
I will then run the flexible pipe all the way up to a snorkel hat (poss home made)
The plan is then in the future (more money permitting) I can slide some steel over the flexy pipe and jazz the appearance up a bit..

If anyone can see any problems with this please let me know and I will post more pics as I get further along (may be a while as have boost project as well at mo)
Cheers guys for all your help..

Cant answer the breather but a educated guess would be the extended breather on the front diff. I never looked at mine before but do know there is a hose in the same place now that just has a u bend at the top

Does anyone know the minimum internal diameter pipe I would need to make a successful snorkel?
would 50mm be to restrictfull?
Cheers
