I thought I'de upload some pics of a homemade ski rack I just made just incase anyone was thinking of doing the same..

Pretty simple in the end I got a couple of bits of alloy from alsco and some rubber from hammer hardware drilled a couple of holes popped a couple of rivets and that was that, cost me probably about $60 ($400 for a thule skirack) Of course I did already have the roof rack..
I'm going to add springs so they pop up automatically and I may fit thicker foam to accommodate different amounts of skis/boards better

I hope this help anyone thinking of making a ski rack just in time for the end of the season haha... oh well best intentions...

Am I right in saying board goes sideways? Certainly different but if it works why not. As for the season work has prevented me getting the snowboard out yet and cant see me getting a break till near october so dont say the seasons nearly over!
I just put the board in a bag on the back seat.
As for the rubber bits all I can say is kea gone Remember the very old AA insurance add featuring a couple of kea

Ah yes I forgot a picture of them fitted.. would help...
Your right there is a good chunk of the season left just feels like it here its been 18 degrees and the snow is melting in front of your eyes,
I did hear theres a cold and snowy snap coming in september though..

Trouble with the back seat method here is your always picking up hitchhikers, I feel too guilty driving past them with back seats empty when theres so much room in the back.
Thats pretty much why I wanted to get all the boards on the roof, to stop the snow melt on the back seat and boot which lingers as a nice wet dog smell..

Didn't think about the Kea's :D only saw them once last year so fingers crossed..

Heres a pic of two fitted, you can get two more underneath facing down..
I havn't seen them side on before but their no wider then the truck so why not...

Thats true if your in Queenstown you'll be able to tell if I've tried... just check the lampposts for scratches :)

I was on both last year but no skiing this year due to the shoulder..

Is that lake alta up remarks?.. did you drive up?..
I didn't get up there in summer but I will this year hopefully..

I'm thinking about riding up the ski road and then you can push for a bit till the top then cycle/walk across the ridge all the way Coalpit road.. then if your really keen cycle all the way back to QT..
Bit of a grueling day thats why its still in the 'thinking' stage.. :)

Lake Alta yes. Drove to the carpark where it was snowing. Cant remember the exact date but it was in the first week of January. More snow then than there was at the end of June. My sister has a batch in Kingston so I get down there quite often.

never had the 4wd down there The carib is faster from picton and 12 hours in a diesel with no sound deadening is a little long.
In saying that though I have been over Nevis in brother in laws work Pathfinder

carib is all wheel drive Only reason it didnt do the nevis was the fords
Carib though has been getting oil in the water since last november so its looking for an upgrade. Maybe a wizzard.

Thinking back to the ski rack. One issue having the boards sideways is they will twist in the wind Could cause damage

Any excuse to buy another Isuzu aye?..
I do like those smaller 4w'ers..
We were thinking of getting a smaller car for everyday driving, the missus wants a Subaru Brat with a bit of a tyre/suspension upgrade.. chances of finding one of them in half decent condition are slim I'd say though..
Plus by the time you lift it up and chuck on some big tyres its not really that much of a cheap runaround..
Still its an idea!..

I did think about the aerodynamics issue but to be honest we dont really go above 70 getting to the skifield and most of the time your doing less then 50 so hopefully no issues.. there clamped down pretty good so they dont move about either..
