1990 TFR gear box

Postby darrenm » Sun Jul 01, 2012 10:36 am

I am looking for some advice on the gear box for this Isuzu model. The gear box in my Isuzu needs to be replaced, however here in NZ these models are not very common. So i am looking for details of other models which use the same gear box or could easly be modified to fit my Isuzu.

Any help would be great.

Thank you

If its the MUA gearbox and yours is 4wd the Rodeo Mu or bighorn should fit although you may have to swap over the selector housing. If 2wd it gets a little harder the other gearboxes will fit but you will also need your tailshaft assembly which is a fairly big job to swap over. Might have to fix your box
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

I just sold my parts 2.5 rodeo with the box in it, any 4x4 mu rodeo or bighorn box will fit that has a 4jb1 motor as geeves said, may be able to get the box back as guy wanted the diffs out of it

Hi Guys

Thanks for the replies. My Isuzu is the 2wd model and can confirm that it has the 4JA1 motor, not the 4JB1 motor. So am i correct in saying that if i where to get a gear box from a Mua or Rodeo i would need to modify the prop shaft/tail shaft. I take it that the splines differ from the one to the other and need to cut the one off the current splines from my prop shaft and have the splines from the replacement gear box fitted.

Thank you
