Manual to Auto

Postby muzila » Sat Feb 09, 2013 12:48 pm

Ok I got a 91 Mu. What is involved in going from manual to auto??

I know of oil coolers. Flywheel to torque converter. Gear shifts. Electrics like reverse lights, lockouts and speedos.

A new crossmember?? Whats the difference between auto and manual x member??

What about the xfer box is there any differences in those??

At the moment I have a Bighorn manual box with a flange on the output not the slip shaft, so I will probably have to change my driveshaft as well.

I know most people will think what a waste of time but this is just a 1st step in a greater plan...

Cheers...

tbh sell your truck and buy an auto one.

im trying to go from auto to manual at the moment but i cant work out the wiring.
and i have no wiring harness for my gear box.

manual fuel pump does not have a kick down lever on it for the auto, its not hard to change tho.
you will need new driveshafts front and rear.

I started a thread a while ago called manual to auto swap.

It might help a bit.

On a manual box you only got a reverse light sensor and a 4wheel drive sensor plus a speedo cable if I remember correctly.

What year Mu you got? The TPS on the injector pump doesnt do anything to a manual box. I took mine out, the whole lot is gone.

The auto must of had both sensors as well???

You should have 2 wires floating around the area of the gearstick hole. the longest one will go over the box to the reverse sensor the other to the 4x4 sensor. Do you not have these wires?

Got any photos of that area???

wiring up a manual from a auto is easy. I used my multimeter with continuity tester to locate what wires did what on the auto trans
eg, park switch, 4wd light and reverse. Then just transfer it over the the loom on the vehicle

I unfortunately don't have the loom.
Do you know what color the wires were for the park brake sensor so I can start the car?

you really need a multi meter, test continuity of the wires in the auto when in park or neutral to get it to start, and the same for reverse lights then swap it over onto the vechile loom, wire in reverse lights to gearbox, pull the rest of the loom out as far as you can so it looks tidy and solder the park or neutral wires together so you can start it, or wire them into the neutral switch on the manual box if it has it
