oil filter relocation

Postby logan » Wed Jan 29, 2014 5:24 am

At last after a lot of research and time I will very soon be able to show everybody how to remote their oil filters on 3.1 and 2.8 engines with parts available from The UK. I wonder will others be interested ?

There was a post a long while ago about cutting a milk bottle to catch the oil. I tryed this the other day on my 3.1 and it workd fine untill the oil ran out the end of the bottle making even more mess than normal. Degreaser cleaned the driveway

No matter what I try I always make a mess with the Bighorn. I now put down a large tray to catch the inevitable spillage and then use a few rags to try and clean up the motor and suspension.

My truck leaks enough anyway so what's a bit more!

When I found out what they were doing I did express my concerns. That was in the days before conservation was fashionable.

Yes working on it now. There is a company here in the UK called Mocal and they supply an oil filter sandwich plate with side ports and cover but only in 20mm 1.5. So on a 3.1 4jg2 engine as fitted to a Bighorn you need to remove the 26mm threaded bush from the oil filter housing and have it machined down to 20mm and shortened to fit. .I will get some photos together as soon as I can.

Yes there are a couple of posts on here about it, but they are as above macining and re tapping the thread, ive never seen the point in moving it just more places for the oil to leak and wreak your engine

its a bit of pain getting too though and if you are going to increase the size of your exhauset/dump pipe then it makes it even trickier

Here you will see the adapter fitted to a 4jg2 bighorn engine that I am fitting into a Landrover Defender. The original threaded bush in the housing has to be machined down to 20mm. This adapter will fit on to a 2.8 engine as the thread is already 20mm. If anyone is interested I can supply all the parts to do this conversion

4jb1(post 88) and 4jg2 use the same filter Surely they would be the same thread?

im confused now does logan's adapter fit straight onto a 4jb1t or must it be machined?

problem is there are 2 4jb1 engines and all the filter books dont describe them very well. If you pick up any filter book it will say one filter for non intercooled 4jb1 and a different one for intercooled. This is somewhat misleading. All pre 88 engines use the non intercooled filter but after 88 all japanese produced vehicles have the intercooled filter but Aussi and european produced vehicles continue to use the non intercooled filter. The actual way to tell the difference is wether it has a gear or belt driven cam. If your wagon has a cam belt it is the same filter as the 4jg2 so will not fit out of the box

All I know is that here in the UK 2.8 have 20mm thread and 3.1 have 26mm both 1.5 pitch. Anyway as you see the adapter as I explained is supplied with 20mm thread and the 26mm has to be machined down to use this swivel adapter, and it works. I am pleased to help.
