Water to air intercooler idea.

Postby topgun94 » Mon Mar 17, 2014 6:47 pm

Hey guys.
I just got my car back from getting the pump rebuilt. Its not running just over 14 psi boost and hauls like a freight train.
THinking about running an intercooler for the big 2.8 powerhouse.
I am also going to upgrade the radiator. IF i upgrade to a radiator with a auto transcooler built in could use this to cool the air for a water to air intercooler?
Otherwise im thinking over going down the same route as seen before and welding a new outlet on a universal intercooler and rotating the housing.
cheers in advance.

I would think that would heat the air instead of cooling it considering that the water in the radiator is much hotter than the air. Also wouldnt the lines be too small

water to air intercooler uses its own radiator in front of the normal radiators.

Yeah I know they usually have seperate radiator for it. Just wondered weather you could combine them. I didn't consider that the temp on the radiator may be hotter then the temp of the fluid running into it

A long time ago I attemped to get some measurements on the bighorn. The setup was an domestic indoor outdoor thermometer with the outside probe taped to the metal pipe on the factory top mount intercooler. The bighorn runs about 14psi max but cruising 100kph will set between 5 and 10. The inlet to the intercooler was about 50C and the outlet 25C. This was in ambient 20C temperatures Interestingly taping it to the manifold saw it back up to 40C. Your radiator is running between 80 and 100C
