89 Bighorn 4jb1t into 90 Trooper 4ze1 wiring help !!

Postby mikeman101 » Fri Dec 16, 2016 2:09 pm

Hi, guys i've been reading the forums a fair bit lately, thought id finally sign up!

I bought a 1990 trooper petrol 4ze1 afew months back for a goood price ($700ish) after
driving it for a while i found that it was incredible thirsty on fuel...Im not paying nz gas prices for a full tank of gas only to get 400ks if im lucky out of it . So gave my boss an offer on the farm truck a 1989 bighorn 4jb1t he accepted it for $600 and i drove it home that day as my plan included uising the bighorn as donor vehicle...they need abit of work but a verry good start point!

Currently the 4ze1 and 4jb1t have been removed from vehicles and 4jb1t is bolted in the trooper

Now the question... what is the quickest and cheapest way for me to get this thing running wiring wise, and how do i do it?

i have thought about swapping loom from bighorn to trooper (seems alot of work) and also considered putting in just the glow plug wiring from bighorn and then using the trooper wiring (water temp ect wires ) for the 4jb1t .I know my way around tools and can do most things....but wiring aint my cup of tea .

Keep in mind this will be used as a farm truck and on the road when needed so doesnt have to be mega flash. any help so i can get this done before xmass would be appreciated

Thanks !

are they both manual?
The engine only needs a couple of wires to work. Hardest part will be the alternator
A look at this might help

I would use the bighorn loom as much as possible. Glow plugs are optional on the 4jb1. If you dont connect them the engine will still start (until winter anyway) You need the starter the fuel cut off and it will run. You need guages and lights for obvious reasons You need the alternator wiring. Then there are the nice things like air con.
Also does anyone know if the diesels used a different brake booster?

Trying to remember how coils and disis are wired. Yes that would be a good choice. Make sure its live when ignition on and dead when not

purely a timer. Dont worry about the glow plugs untill you get everything else right. Factory glow if the coolant is above 5C is 0.5 seconds ie not enough to do anything

If you want it reliable swap the complete looms and dash so rev counter also works, its not a major job you would have it done in a weekend
