very.
Started crunching the numbers, if i lived on the east coast i wouldve probaly put the vt injected 5litre holden v8 in it. But diesel is the go if you live in the sticks.
Il take some pics & post up the progress.

engine is out. the old engine mounts are geting taken in to repco tommorow, they have holden rodeo 2.8td left & right. & a holden jackaroo 3.1td left mount on the shelf @ $90 each ouch. hopefully the mystery is solved.
Steve looking at one of the turbo water hoses of your engine it was completly blocked, not sure if that contributed to the engine failure.

New motor mite go back in on saturday

Was it blocked with gunk I did change a few pipes and hoses over from the 3.1 to the 2.8 for the oil filter cooler setup because of the 3" dump pipe and exhaust and the heater hoses.
I had to change the pipe from the head to the bottom radiator hose as well if I remember right but you can use the ones off your old engine I would also replace all of the hoses with new ones while the engine is out just to be safe and a hell of a lot easier to do then.

Motor is in as of yesterday.
Got the engine mounts through Repco in Darwin, they have a listing for isuzu MU so it wasnt rodeo or jackaroo which has confused me a little bit.
I have the Receipt somewhere at home & will post up the numbers soon.
things that need to be installed
Stall converter bolts
starter motor
belts
Exhuast to turbo bolts
radiator & fan
vacum lines
bullbar
hopefully it will get knocked over today so i can hear it keep over tonight.

Using Penrite running in oil 15/40 (as suplied by builder)
their instructions were fairly simple..
DONT LET IT IDLE
DONT OVER REV IT
DROP OIL AFTER 500Kkm
enjoy

the old engine crankshaft could be turned by hand (allmost) while he was removing the converter bolts last week.
So she was pretty tired by the sounds of it 370,000 +

Crikey this has been a long process hope your misses hasn't put you in the dog house to sleep with no wizard to drive for a while.
I hope it has been worth all this drama in the end I have just sorted out the 2.8 I put in my mu at last a lot of stuffing around with the injector pump but I still have bit of turbo lag down low revs so I might put the original 2.8 turbo back on it and it should spool up a bit quicker I hope it still goes good but takes awhile to spool up with the 3.1 turbo in it unless you drive it like its stolen

Injectors are back in, started ok with no leaks.
Took it for a out the back of the lake the up to to airport.
everything seems normal, the tune is very lean @ 3000rpm in 3rd gear (auto).
But Ill just run it in, drop the mineral oil out after 500km (penrite 15/40) & get it dyno tunned in darwin later on.

We had a look around for leaks when we got back home & it appears the front crank seal has a slow drip......
Is this normal on a new engine with running in oil?

I mite have a couple of unused seals in some timing belt kits ive bought over the years.
Plan tomorrow is to put the bullbar back on.
& if enough time remove belts & timing cover to see where it is leaking from.....
Sump gasket?
Crank seal?
or Cam seal?
very disappointed about this as its taken ages to get this far.....

So if it keeps leaking then there is potential for the timing belt to fail causing a piston hiting a valve?

Yep if cambelt gets too contaminated and lets go then your pistons will kiss your valves $$$. Would seals failing that early be covered by the engine builder?

I rang the Builder today & told them about the dramas we had with installing the injectors (as there was no new heatsheild washers in the new head, therefore the head had to come off the old engine as the heatshield is too hard to remove when installed) & the oil leak coming from the front of the engine.
They said if i need new seal they will post some up.
but i had a look around & I had 2 old Gates timing belt kits stored away which both had crank & cam seals unused :D

Ive never replaced a crank or cam seal before so im not sure what im up against.

where to start...
Engine builder supplied a new crank seal & timing belt.
A mate made a crank sprocket bolt remover tool, thanks to seeing one somewhere on the forum.
Before removing the timing belt, i turned the crank to line up TDC & put a bolt in the Cam & fuel pump pulleys so they wont move.
Ive replaced the timing belt on 4jg2 engine about 4 times., i can do it without removing the radiator.
I removed the cam seal, it looked ok.
I removed the crank seal, a mate helped me replace it.
Put the new timing belt on.
I snapped a 10mm bolt when torqueing up the belt retainer on the fuel pump pulley.
As i dont have any easy outs or a drill, i figured it would be easyier & quicker to use the fuel pump pulley off stardogs fuel pump sitting on the work bench.
Put everything back together fired it up put about 500kms on it dropped the oil and changf the filter. But engine leaking oil from turbo return pipe & front seal area again..
I wasnt 100% happy with the timing & the way it was runing aswell.

So gave MTQ a call and booked it to time it & dyno it.
Drove into darwin dropped the car off at mtq just after 8am & left at 1030.
Paid $140 for them to tell me ive got a oil leak & asked me if i knew where was leaking from. They tightened a bolt on the inlet plenum thingy.
Asked me where i got the turbo from. I said its brand new $500 ebay turbo.
The reply was the turbo i bought wont make engough boost for the engine because its a chinese turbo.
I asked them if they could time the engine, as everything is new but not running right.
Reply was they only touch timing belts if they a fitting a new fuel pump.
I said my fuel pump was rebuilt a little over a year ago.
He asked "what do you want to do"
i said i can leave it here overnite if yot want to fix it.
Reply was i be better of taking it to a mechanic as they dont do engine work.

Paid $140 & left.
The mrs is very disappointed with the situation of the wizard at the moment.
& made me look at new cars the rest of the afternoon.
Something that didnt cross my mind after sinking thousands of $$$$$ on a new engine.
We looked at the new colorado , ss sports wagon & isuzu mu x.
The mu x was the only 1 we test drove, she likes it alot... But all 3 of the cars are over 50grand.. Ouch.

rubbish If the numbers match it is essentially identical in performance (for a little while at least)
