4JB1 running rich??

Postby magicdeo » Wed Apr 22, 2015 4:33 pm

Hi all, my 97 4JB1-T smells very smoky when left idling. In the right light you can see her puffing out a little smoke although not too much. It doesn't seem to blow too much smoke when driven hard either (no more than any old diesel does). Im worried shes running a little rich, what do you think?

Cheers

it will be fine, you can get the injector tips replaced and injector pump rebuilt but it will still smoke, the 4jb1 isnt the cleanest burning engine

do the basics anyway. They wont hurt. A double dose of your favorite injector cleaner and ensure your air cleaner is good. All the good books say injector tips should be replaced every 100000km but these ones normally do double that but first sign of trouble is smokey idle
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

Thanks for the replies fellas. I haven't had the truck all that long but i do know the motor has only done about 30 000kms. It did however go back together with the old IP and injectors. The injectors have been replaced which has made a big difference in power and economy and I have completely serviced the motor which runs very well. I have always just been a little worried about smelling rich at idle
