4JB1 injection timing help

Postby magicdeo » Sun Apr 24, 2016 8:29 pm

Gday all. I have a 2000 2.8 rodeo. When i bought it i was told the pump timing is slightly advanced. I think he said 1.5 degrees? My question is could this cause damage to the motor long term? He said it made a nice difference to the power but i will take reliability over power any day. The truck starts and runs fine, plenty of power and returns good economy. Should i be worried?
Cheers

only way to check it and to be sure will be to put a dti gauge in the back of the injector pump and check the lift of the pump

Does it knock much more than usual for a diesel?
Does it heat up easily?
If no probably not
Only catch is that timing advance is normally done in conjunction with fuel increase. Of course you only use that extra fuel if you put your foot down
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

twisting the pump by degrees isnt how you do it as i said you have to check it with a dti gauge in the rear of the injector pump, 1.5 degrees is nothing though if guessing is good for you

Rob, have you found an ideal pump setting?

my rebuiilt pump has to come off again to fix some oil leaks so i may aswell have a fiddle with the pump if there is some improvement to be had.

it will be running more fuel and boost soon as ive finished running it in.
cheers, Josh

Very engine is different need to road tune or dyno engine to get max improvements, i set 2 of mine up to 0.58mm lift at 11 degrees before dtc factory is 0.5mm, both were running custom turbos and pumps though, ran 12 psi and went well
