Missus cooked my 4jg2

Postby Sylvester » Sun Mar 18, 2018 8:21 am

Hi all , let my missus drive my bighorn and it must of had a leak and she didn't see the temp gauge go full temp ,
when the car stopped going forward she realized something must be wrong

When I got there I tried to start it but it would not start so had to tow it home ,

I was just wondering what will be stuffed and what I can reuse .

I was thinking of doing a full rebuild but am a bit concerned about the block , turbo , injectors
will these still be able to be reused ?

Thanks
Sylvester

When you tried to start it did it turn over or just go click? The chances are not great and a second hand motor might be te easiest answer

When I tried to start it just turned over but didn't fire up , just a bit of smoke ,
then two weeks later I tried and eventually it started with heaps of smoke but it seemed to be ok other than the smoke and a little bit of a rough idle but not too bad .

Thanks

You might be lucky. If it doesnt have any bad symptoms after a month you were very lucky

so do oyu think it's worth doing it up , the engine is old 400,000 K , so it's time for a rebuild anyways , or could there be trouble doing up a cooked engine .
Will the injectors and turbo be OK?

Thanks

Turbo can with stand more heat than the engine I think, they are cheap as chips anyway

I've really gone and done it this time..

The Missus was driving the 4jb1 down south and I told her to keep an eye on the temperature because is gone through a few hoses lately..
she notice the gauge start to go up and stopped, water bubbling in reservoir!!.. after 20mins of cooling down, topped up coolant and started to drive again...

The temperature shot up again, this time she started to panic about being stranded with two screaming kids in the back so she nursed it along for another 10-20 mins to the next town to wait to be rescued.. problem is in that final 15 mins of hot running, engine developed a loud ticking sound

We towed it home, I've started it up and ticking sounds like its coming from block.. cant see water leaking anywhere.. on idle ticking is almost unnoticeable.. gets louder/faster with throttle.. no noticeable oil in water or visa versa

I was optimistically thinking take off the waterpump and examine that, any other ideas??

Thanks in advance

I thought you had a 4jb1. You might get lucky but you won't know for a week or 2. Ticking might just be a taper or noise that's always been there if you had listened but might also be a head leak. Could also be a broken ring. Looking at water pump will only help if the pump is at fault. There have been a few that have rusted the impellor. Head failure in these rarely mixes oil and water. Normally only compression leak into radiator. This might be a little causing the engine to pressurise blowing hoses and forcing water into the bore when stopped causing white smoke on start up or it could be severe. I saw this on a Toyota 3l engine. First crank with cap off saw a litre of water expelled rapidly from the radiator soaking the person that was watching for bubbles

Cheers guys

Mine is a 4JB1 Geeves, just jumped onto this thread a it looked a bit similar..
Is there an easy way to check the head/gasket before I try the waterpump idea?
Would there be bubbles in the radiator from cold or only once the thermostat opens??
Also can you think of any other tests I can do to eliminate any other possibilities??

Might have to take you up on that engine Rob I presume if its cracked head, broken piston rings, bearings or anything that major then new engine would be cheaper and easier!!

Hard to know. If its overheating in a short time from cold that is not good. If its blowing all the coolant into the resivoir that's bad. If it has more crankcase pressure than normal then run it till it stops and take Robs offer.
An Escort I had did a head gasket but the bubbles built up under the thermostat. 5km out of Rotorua it boiled but the radiator was stone cold. Took the thermostat out filled with geothermal water and drove back to Wellington. Carib I had had a leaky head and just had an oily radiator for a year and 30000km before I sold it. The Opel I had would pressurise the radiator and spit steam out the exhaust on start up. Sold that very quick

Getting it hot doesnt worry the 4jb1 if it keeps the water in it, the noise is what I'd be worried about, normally they pick up in the sleeves if they have a good cook up, have engines here if you get stuck or just sell me the whole truck haha

I'll get her going and see what happens, fingers cross it heats up normally and the ticking is just a stuffed waterpump :|

happy new year everyone

I didn't get much of a chance to look at the truck over Xmas..

I did start her up and leave her running for a while.. no bubbles anywhere that i could see, I left her ticking over for a good while and no overheating!!
The ticking go louder after being sat unused for a while..

The mechanic we use at work suggested getting it pressure tested, not sure how to do that, do you have to take out the glow plugs or the injectors?

If its not too big a job do you think its worth paying to get it done so I know what Im dealing with??

He suggested the ticking was probably a piston/sleeve..

Cheers

If its a ring or sleeve etc it will be fuming more than it used to. Compression test wont hurt and wont cost more than an hours labour. Getting a long screwdriver stethascope might help locate the tick

Has anyone tried the brand new replacement radiators being sold on Trademe for around $150. I'm thinking of putting one in the 92 Mu, not many fins left on mine.

I bought a plastic tank one for 250, not as strong as metal but does the job.
