the 2.8 and 3.1 are very different motors. The 2.8 is direct injection and will start very cold even if the glow plugs are not working at all. It also has less than perfect low down power but likes to rev. The 3.1 is indirect injection It needs to use glow plugs even if slightly warm It has stacks of low down power but falls off at higher revs. While still economical compared to other brands it uses more fuel than the 2.8 which puts some much smaller diesels to shame
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them
