And then here was a bang followed by ......

Postby suza2 » Thu Apr 22, 2010 5:39 pm

Hi all,
My wife was driving back from town today when there was a bang  :o followed by a screaming noise and lots of smoke. End story the turbo has come well apart, lots of bits of lose steel floating around on inspection.

Can anyone tell me if the turbo on the 4JG2 (3.1) is the same as the 2.8?

What was she doing to blow the turbo? (it might not of been her fault)

They are different but if the exhaust flange housing is swapped they can be fitted. You loose a little top end but not much. Your better off fitting a new turbo as the factory ones for the 3.1 have a limited life.
Pm Powertruck as he quite often can do a good price on a new one
If the exhaust blew should be a simple job but if the inlet went there is a risc of turbo parts in the engine
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

It wasn't the wifes fualt, I guess at 270,000 things wear out. The good news is th edamge has been contained to the turbo.
