Re-installing 4JB1-T

Postby BrokenMu » Thu Jul 08, 2010 12:00 am

Hi everyone,

About two years ago, the compressor wheel of my turbo decided to break into 500 pieces and destroy my blocks internals.
Anyhow, I'm about to get my motor back from the rebuilder and I believe that I have everything that I need.
I am somewhat mechanically minded, but it was two years ago when I removed it and I am fearing the reinstall.

Has anyone by chance ever written a guide to removing/installing a 4JB1T?

If not, are there any tips anyone can give me?

Or, is there anyone who owns a mu and lives in the northern suburbs of Melbourne and would be willing to park their car in my driveway for a weekend so I could use their engine bay as an example??.. That'd be handy and I'd be happy to reward in beer or cash.

Should I assemble the motor with all bolt-on's before dropping it into the bay?

As always, any help is greatly appreciated.

Regards
- Michael

photos of all sides of the motor from another club member should help refreash your memory as you go along, I'd send you photos of mine but it wouldn't help as its a left hand drive, I would bolt on everything that I could before installing, after its in putting stuff on can be a bugger.

And these.
All photos are from a UCS55 (1992-2.8).
The only thing different to factory is a tee off the boost to a gauge, the removal of the QWS diaphram from the exhaust valve (valve has been wired open), the intercooler and the snorkle.
Note: It doesn't get cold enough in Dunners to need the QWS. LOL.

Wayne,
Next you'll be saying that metric is not the best way to measure things.

I'm sorry Alan your rite the steering and brakes are on the right side, my mistake, sorry to say if I had to measure every thing in metric nothing would come out rite, to late to teach an old dog new tricks now. I do have the metric wrench's down pat but that's about it. At least you don't have to worry about sun glare when you open the bonnet turnturn HAHA

just noticed christfng that you own Peugeot 405, had a few Peugeot's myself, but middle 80's 505's, great cars, excellent diesel motors, only thing was the automatics were weak, I had two with auto trans and both went out on me and no one here in the states liked to work on them, but the 5 speeds were great. I did have 1 405 it was a 79 wagon non turbo automatic, it had about as much power as a healthy fart.

Hi, For what it is worth, I just attempted to refit my 4JB1T back into my MU, no hope of aligning the clutch
and gearbox, (no where near it!).
I eventually removed it and dropped the oil (again) and removed the tin plate bottom of the sump, also
the oil pickup.
The engine went straight in without any problems. :D then refitted the section of sump and pickup....
I don't know if this is normally done, I could not find any reference to it anywhere.

You probably already have yours in now, but this may help others.

Cheers John

damn john, sounds like you had a rough time..

I found that removing the engine mounts from the car and bolting them to the engine helped as it was one less thing to worry about while trying to line up the gearbox to clutch.

If there's a next time, it will be motor and box out at once..
