Oil Pressure

Postby 55zed » Wed Aug 04, 2010 8:54 pm

Hi, I am new here just bought a '92 MU with a 4JB1-T engine.
It had a very worn turbo that was pumping oil into the intake of the engine, the turbo was removed when I bought it and
the condition of the engine was unknown, 220,000K's.
I obtained a second hand turbo off a Rodeo and fitted it.
When I finally got it started the oil pressure was max on the gauge, I warmed the engine and reved it a few times and the
pressure dropped to 3 kpa at idle and went to about 6 if reved.

Finally my question is, do these engines suffer from sticky oil pressure relief valves?
I changed the oil and filters before starting as it is unknown when it was done before.
Would the high oil pressure cause problems with the turbo?

This engine is also fitted with a in-line filter to the turbo mounted on the right hand inner guard, I presume it is non-standard.

I have not worked on one of these before and had great difficulty fitting the turbo, is there a recommended way to do this? as all the manuals
I have been able to download don't explain removal procedure.

Cheers John

I would like to see a picture of this filter, What is it filtering ?
Have you got the old turbo?

I used 5w-40 Penrite..
The filter is on the oil line that feeds the turbo, I will get a photo and put it here, but won't be until tommorrow afternoon.
I have the turbo, it was pulled apart when I got it, the inlet side has been rubbimg on the snail housing and left grooves on it

Oil pressure looks ok to me as well.
Mine goes to the top of the gauge from a cold start.
When warm and idling it is around 2-3 and will reach 6 at higher revs.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the link, I will have a look there if it continues, as I have only just got it started so maybe
a bit gummed up in there as it appears the car has been sitting for about 12 months.
How the hell do you change the oil filter?? I was only able to get mine off when I had the turbo off??

I change my filter by going in from the top. Others remove the RH front wheel and go through the rubber inner guard.
I have found that I needed one of the 3-finger type filter removal tools on the end a couple of socket set extensions.
There are a couple of different types of these 3-finger filter removal tools. Use one with the flatter fingers rather than one with round fingers as they can jam between the filter and the block. I will take a photo of the two types if I get a chance tomorrow.
I also have an intercooler fitted which makes it even more difficult. I reach in under the brake booster and pull it out through there. It's a tight fit. I even have to take my watch off to get in there.

I would be taking the filter off. It might have caused the turbo too fail
5w-40 oil is fine. I had thought it might have been a 20w-50 or 25w-50 which is too heavy

hi john
is your filter mounted above housing or beneath
mine is above i used a big jubilee clip round the top and was able to wedge a bit wood between it and the body to get the first bit unscrewed
not much room in there at all and i haven't got a inter cooler

I wouldnt fit anything in the oil line to the turbo. The turbo relies on full pressure and flow to lubricate and cool it. A filter there could only be because they couldnt be bothered changing the oil regularly
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

Might they have done this as an easy option for a remote filter alternative?

Nice work like the touch off the high temp braded lines are they ryco hose and fiittings a ryco through flow mounting plate and filter simply but so efective do tell how it helps betweens changes and if oil pressuer changes PLZ u could put a flow switch on the return line set at what u decide u want a warn light to say change the filter (as filter blocks flow slows )

What that is, is what they call a bypass filter, its a filter that hooks into any external oil line, it does not take the place of your reguler filter, its more like a helper filter, looks like they used the turbo oil line to hook it in, something I wouln't have done as like Alan says your turbo needs full pressure all the time, if that filter gets to dirty and the oil pressure drops to much, it could cause premature turbo failure!!
I live in my own little world, but its OK they know me here.

Here are some pictures of the filter removal tools as mentioned above.
Both are quite similar but one has more blade like legs that is better on the 4jb1 filter. There is not much clearance between the filter and some part of the engine.

Put a pair of rubber gloves on that should give you enough grip ;)

I use the one of the left, still need both hands in the to use it tho, but a lot easier than turning it off with your hands if its tight

Well, it's all turned pear shaped
My first drive down the road and it looks like I am fogging for mozzies, great clouds of blue oil smoke, pumping out the exhaust,
so I sneak home hoping no one has seen me..
sitting at home now with hood up gunning the engine trying to see what is happening, starts clean without smoke but pumps it
out the back when I go for a drive, doesn't matter anymore, while gunning it it starts to rattle and knock.
So off comes the rocker cover and check little things, valve clearance = 50th Hmmmm bit loose maybe..
Still knocking, but sounds like from top of engine.
Off with it's head!
Turn engine over and #3 sitting a bit lower than #2, but that is ok 'cause I can lift it up by 3mm if I lever it up with a screwdriver
and it has been kissing the head...that is where the noise is from..
Now the engine is out and there is no sign of a bearing on #3, has been useing the conrod for a bearing, ouch
I am now looking into a used 4JB1T to get me going.
Sadly the engine that came out looks increadibly clean inside including in the water jacket, so me thinks it has been a replacement engine recently.
I think it has been hammered tho, because the turbo overpressure valve was blocked off and the line to the wastegate actuator had
an adjustable device in it.

I am thinking of useing Penrite Diesel oil which is 20w60, any thoughts?

Cheers John
