It will be a gear drive not a chain

Gear or chain would be preferable to belt. Apart from noise I can't think of a good reason Mr Isuzu went to belt.

All the seals are in different places as the gear needs oil but the belt doesnt. The gear engine also got the smaller filter. Dont know why isuzu changed in 88 to a belt but holden carried on selling isuzu sourced engines with a gear up to 98 or so

My 2 cts... The 2.8 is the 4JB1 engine and 3.1 is the 4JG2 engine, both engines available with timing gear and belt. Also, the timing gear set for the 4JH1 engine WILL fit both engines, despite having finer gears and thus much lower noise. However, the timing marks of the 4JH1 engine will not match the 4JG2 engine, it's off by 2 or 3 teeth at the fuel pump side, if I'm not mistaken.

Unfortunately, EFI engines are all timing belt....

Also, the timing belts for both 4JB1 and 4JG2 fill fit each other despite having different part numbers

not so re timing belts. One has a round tooth the other square but to add confusion some later 2.8s had the 3.1 belt.
