turbo oil leak

Postby benny » Sun Sep 12, 2010 4:59 pm

I have a little problem with an oil leak, mainly the oil feed to the turbo under the turbo. I have a fair idea how I want to fix it which is take the entire pipe off and let it drain, clean and re-assemble as this is quite hard to get to am I better taking the whole turbo off or can I fix this by solely taking the pipe off from the inner guard? Any part numbers for the gaskets required would be a great help to, but can make my own.

Looked it up in my cd manual, to find it is the oil return pipe under the turbo, looks easy enough to repair???

I think its a copper washer
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

Copper washer? The oil return from the turbo on my 2.8 MU just had a paper gasket.

(It is a crap place to get to with the sockets)

The oil feed on top does have a copper washer though...

The one under is the drain and has a paper gasket. the easiest way to get it of is with a 1/4 drive flexi head ratchead and 150mm extension. The worst part of the whole job is the reasemmbly in regard to lining up the gasket an easy way passed that is to tied the gasket to the drain pipe witgh either cotten thread or a strand of copper from a bit of electrical wire. With out doing this it is a @#%# of a job. I have donre a few times now.

I always use some gasket cement and glue the gasket to the surface of the part I'm putting on, or really cheat and just use some hi temp silicone sealer
I live in my own little world, but its OK they know me here.

Well I took the wheel off today and had a good look around, bolts under the turbo easy, bolts on the block not easy. I will have to remove the driveshaft, take out the oil filter and this should make the whole process easier. Next weekend?

The job actually was'nt as bad as I originally thought, good planning helped alot.
1/ Drain oil and remove transfer case driveshaft, then oil filter, let drain for an hour.

2/ refit oil filter and sump plug, then degrease entire engine, let dry remove oil filter.

3/ open ended spanner for bottom of oil return, 3/8 150mm extension for top bolts (easy). remove pipe, clean all sufaces after removing paper gaskets. check for clean.

4/ Cut paper gaskets insuring the top bolt holes are smaller so the bolts dont fall out.
Using high temp silicone to re-install and if your lucky like me, everything just clicked into place.

5/ Road test, bugger oil still leaking.

6/ Spend the rest of the weekend to find the other leak, as I said in earlier posts I had my transmission replaced by a mechanic, the leak was between the bellhousing and trans.

7/ Check invoice.

8/ Relief.

9/ Rear oil seal was replaced by them.

10/ Take to mechanic for them to replace at no charge (thank god) he was very understanding but should be to as I've spent a small fortune there over the years.
