Belt or gear?

Postby Arnoud » Thu Nov 11, 2010 5:30 am

Hello all,

Does someone know if my cam is belt or gear driven? Is it possible to tell from this picture? I hope it shows enough detail.

The engine is a 4JB1T.

Thanks in advance.

The black cover shown on the picture is plastic. But from what I read on this forum, the belt-type cover is supposed to be ribbed. Mine is obviously not.

I seems the plastic cover covers an aluminium cover, but I'm not sure about that.

What about the oil filter? I that an indication of the engine type too? I'll have to look that up.

Three weeks ago I ordered an oil filter using the number shown in the picture as reference:

The mechanic told me he had ordered a filter with the same spec coded: UOF 921 / DO 921

That filter is the same as ryco Z178A used on the 4JB1 gear drive motor here in Australia

Thanks for the replies. Seems you think it is gear drive, but I need to be sure.

I dont know the history of this engine and have no clue about the milage or age of the of the cam belt. (If there is one)

I guess I will have to loosen the cover to be sure.

Does anyone know an other way to find out?

I am 99.99% sure it's a gear drive motor. Some gear drive motors have 2 covers plastic outer alloy inner 10 & 12 in the picture

This is what a belt drive cover looks like

99.99% that's pretty sure! And happy with that as it makes me feel more secure about the chance of a snapping cam belt.

The situation might be similar as shown in the pictures. (plastic cover on top of the aluminium timing gear cover) But it does look different from both drawings; belt as well as gear drive . I will give it another close examination and hope to be able to draw a final conclusion. Will let you know.

Thanks for your help.
