FUEL PUMP HELP

Postby isumu » Mon Nov 15, 2010 1:07 pm

Hi All

I actually had account years ago, but have lost all information on it.

I have 91 MU that I've owned for maybe 4 or 5 years now, of that, it has only been on the road for maybe 1 year in total.

To cut a long story short, I have recently got the Mu back on the road with a brand new motor out of a crate, but it has been smoking pretty bad (smell of unburnt fuel). I am not too familar with diesels, or cars in general, but I do know that the pumps have been overhauled and are running well. I have taken it to a diesel specialist and they have actually said that everything seems to be running fine.

It is just the smoking that cant be fixed. It's something that I can't live with unfortunately. The diesel guys have now said that the only other thing they can do is look at the pump itself, which will cost probably in excess of $2k...

Did anyone else have the same problem (excessive smoke with unburnt diesel smell) and find a fix for it?

Or does anyone know where I can source another fuel pump from?

I have already spent more than the initial purchase of the car keeping it running, so I don't know if I can continue with this anymore. Plus, i think it will be very hard to sell a Mu that is smoking like this.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Its got to be
pump not working correctly
injectors not working correctly
timing either cam or pump out
low compression
running cold
In no particular order
If a diesel specialist says its ok are you just being picky?
Its not unusual for these motors to smoke a little

Sorry if I wasn't clear.
The specialist said that the car runs fine, except for the smoke. When i first brought it there, I thought maybe it wasn't that bad, but when I turned it on and he was behind having a look, even he made a face and said it was bad haha. And i'm sure he's seen his fair share of smoky diesels.

Specialist should be able to check timing Test pump and compression and clean injectors in around a couple of hours labour. If after that he cant tell whats wrong dont pay the bill

Ok, the only option i have left is looking at the pump.

Question:
My original motor was belt-driven, but with the new motor it is now chain driven*?(i am not sure of the correct term). Has anyone done the same engine swap I have?

My memory is coming back to me now (this was quite a few years ago). The place where I got my new motor, they pointed out that the new motor is gear *something* where as the old one was belt-driven. He gave me a pump that apparently was from a Rodeo and said i just had to get it re-conditioned (which I did).

Because of this, does that mean the pump should be timed differently? Am I even using the right pump?

These are the details given to me for my actual pump that I have now:

Zexel no.
104641-1701

Bosch no.
9461620770

Isuzu no.
8944528271

Can anyone make sense of all this? Sorry if its confusing, because its sure confused me!

Is there an Isuzu number I can call who actually know the Mu?

EDIT: Longshot, mine might be a 1990 model? Does this make any differences?

It has been done the other way with few issues. The biggest is changing the gear wheel. The 4jb1 was gear driven up to 88 in bighorns and 92 in jackeroos and 98ish in rodeos All other engines should be belt drive.
Any decent diesel specialist should be able to diagnose this

Golfers who use good quality golf clubs for sale, like Killer Whale, Titleist or Ping, know that a custom fit is the only way to go. After all, if you're going to invest a lot of money into your game, it only makes sense to have the perfect fit and performance. Even the most reserved golfers should quietly view discount golf clubs as weapons, and be ready to do battle over the tees, the rough, the sand traps and the green, even with their best golfing buddies. ishiner
