Vac hoses near EGR stuff on MU

Postby kcsoft » Wed Dec 08, 2010 10:37 am

Can anyone tell me what all the vacuum hoses other than the EGR stuff and the cold start flap thing are for? mine are mostly perished and i've started blocking them off as they leak and I can't work out where they all go.

Is it okay to remove all the junk there?? hoses, those valve things etc...??
or if it's required does anyone have a photo of a complete set-up with everything in it's proper place?

Besides the EGR crap, there are 2 hoses running to your fuel pump, one is for increased fuel as air pressure rises and the other (if you have air con) is an idle up while air con is running.

There is a large hose running to your brake booster also.

You can get rid of most of the EGR system if you blank off the exhaust and inlet sections. I'll take this opportunity to make a shameless plug  I do sell EGR blanking plates if you're interested.

Kind regards
Michael

I can only see one on top of the pump, could you point out the other hose for me?

I'm going to scrap the egr hoses as most of them are perished/hard anyway and use the remaining 'good' hoses to fix the stuff thats needed.

while on the topic of vac hoses, i noticed on the back of the alternator there is a second much smaller hose coming from the alternator, i'm guessing this feeds the egr and other gear?

edit: when you say air pressure do you mean engine or ambient pressure???

The second hose which activates the fast idle (with the air conditioning on) is on the lower side of your injector pump.
There is a diaphram the works part of the throttle arrangement.

From memory the other hose that you are talking about that runs to the top of the fuel pump is boost pressure.

I meant boost pressure not ambient. The large hose from the alternator feeds the brake booster and smaller hose feeds your EGR system, this smaller hose is what you want to use for air con idle up when doing away with the EGR system, otherwise you'd just block it off.

Will get a picture for you later today.

Kind regards

Stole this picture from gomulletgo's members rigs thread :)

Where he has written "To intercooler" this is for increased fuel during periods of high boost. Therefor it is plumbed into your intake.

Where he has written "Block off?" This is your idle up actuator during periods that the air con is on. This is plumbed through the EGR gear, originating from the rear of the alternator/vac pump and would require tracing exactly where is comes and goes to ensure it still operates once you've rid your engine bay of the unnecessary hoses and gear.

Ok for everybody thats interested this is the solenoid that controls the A/C on my 92 MU. All you need is a hose from the alternator to the solenoid then a hose to the Idell up valve all the other solenoids can be removed

Cheers Pig, I've got my aircon idle up actuating now, but the actuator arm is adjusted too far forward to actually strike the idle arm...

Yet another obstacle :(

got all that gear sorted now!!

removed the junk and left the a/c idle actuator and had to fix the boost compensator hose as it was really badly perished. and quite oily too i might add
