2.2 motor? I thought all the Amigos in America had the 3.0 or 3.5 v6 or 2.6 petrol for older models.
What engine number? What mileage and service history
Possibilities are faulty pump or bypass in pump,faulty bearings, internal leak

Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them
