bighorn 3.1 blown piston liners

Postby bozza72 » Tue Jan 18, 2011 11:02 am

Hi all need some opions from you please.

I took my95 bighorn to the mechanic as i thought the rings were worn, lots of oil burning & smoke, so he took the head off and found this in the last piston bore

after saying a few choice words we sat down to work out a plan.

1 i can get this kit http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Car-parts-accessories/Isuzu/auction-348052145.htm from trade me (once we work out if its the right one) (Geeves any ideas ???)

2 we can get a recon short block from here http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Car-parts-accessories/Isuzu/auction-347030917.htm

3 we get a whole new engine from here http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Car-parts-accessories/Isuzu/auction-347030902.htm

4 i scrap the whole thing & walk quietly away

it goes without saying i dont have much money & my mecanic is cheap & reliable but doesnt work for free...

So what do you all think would be my best option ???

your thought & comments would be much appreciated.

HOLEY CRAP!!! How long are you going to hold onto the bighorn.
If you wont to keep it for a long time then I would go for the new motor.
If you keep it for 3 years or less go for the liners and head gasket set but in the end it mite cost the same as a new motor so get a quote first.
You mite need a new piston to.
Hope this helps

I thought i had bad luck! :o

that first kit listed is too small, already got the measurements off him wen i was looking for parts.
depending on how much your mechanic charges i would go for a basic rebuild kit from isuzu parts wich is around $800 if you head is still allgood (bare head is $400) http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Car-parts-accessories/Isuzu/auction-347030904.htm
the thing is you still dont really know what you need untill its all apart, i thought i would just get the basic kit but once i got it to bits foung that allot of extras were needed eg. camshaft worn out $200 and a whole lot of other stuff that i cant remember rite now, also if its done over 200k then you want to replace heater/coolant hoses-$300 hose kit + engine mounts etc, it all ads up.
ill end up paying $2500 in parts, but because im doing it myself it works out cheaper (mechanic quoted me $1000 just to take the engine out)

to get the new engine and have someone put it in or to get a kit and have sumone rebuild it will cost around the same price, and definatly will be over $5000

less hassle option, and also what i would have done if i hadnt modified my truck so much and spent so much money on it in the past would be just buy another one and sell the old one for parts or keep it for spares.
i just didnt want to get another one and have to do all the mods again.
and i enjoy working on it.

good luck with whatever path you choose to go down

cheers
mike

option 1 fail. The size looks more like a 4jb1
2 and 3 ok but how is the rest of your engine? Option 3 replaces everything. Option 2 does not but ask for the fine print. They might require you to replace everything to get the warranty.

I see the seller on option 2 and 3 is also offering single liners which could be a cheap option

True Was it a faulty liner or something got into the cylinder or something else. Also is there damage behind the liner
