HELP fan/alternator belt tension??

Postby scotts90 » Sun Jul 24, 2011 3:49 pm

I'v had a search around the net and the forums but cant find a definative answer.

So my issue is that the fan/alternator belt in my 97 Jackaroo(bighorn) squeels when cold and you put some revs on it (VERY ANNOYING). But I can't for the life of me figure out how to adjust the tension on it. It does feel a little slack so im hoping simple puttin a bit of tension on it will fix the screaching banshee that my belt has become.

Cheers,
Scott

get a solid 13 inch long screwdriver between the block aircon and alternator and loosen the 3 bolts lever outwards then tighting the bolt on the ark shaped bracket. Tighten the other 2. Then fit bandaids to knuckles. Its easier with 2 people

You need to loosen the bolt in the red circle then use the bolt in the blue circle to adjust the belt

no screw in the bracket on mine either, I used a pich bar and carefully pushed the alternator over to tighten it, if you take the battery out you can get a decent angle between the aircon pump and the alternator

For some reason the 4JG2 motors here on the Jacks do not have the adjusting bolt. I have recently done mine found the standard too stretched 15A1030 so I fitted a shorter belt 15A1015. Yes, Remove battery, need a long lever between a/c compressor(worries me the amount of tension on the alloy housing) and alternator to get the belt tensioned, good to have 2 people.
Best to also loosen the lower support bolt need 2 x 14mm spanners so need less tension to move the alternator.

the 2 14mm spanners are great if one of them is a ratchet spanner too, the gap is quite small.

hey so basicly you wedge a big screwdriver or small crowbar between the a/c compressor housing and the alternator housing after undoing the bold that attaches the alt housing to the arc bracket. then lever and retighten the bolt on the rear of the arc bracket?

OK! i am having some trouble with this also, but my belt is super tight!
there is almost no deflection! and it still sequels. not for to long but for more than 10 seconds! even if its hot outside. i have even had my mechanic take a look at it and they are puzzled, we have tried new belts and everything! the only thing that helps for about a week is belt conditioner.

Id suggest taking the belts off and seeing if one of the bearings/compressors are siezed, if one doesnt turn the belts will squel however tight they are.

dont run the belts that tight. You will kill the bearing in the water pump and power steer

My thoughts are wrong belts worn pulleys or as already suggested something siezed.

So I am new to this site and so far am loving the information here!

Just shedding some light on this topic as I had to look high and low on the interwebs for a solution. I also was a bit stubborn and did not want to install a 15A1015 belt instead of the 15A1030.

I tried installing a 'Gates' branded 15A1030 belt and could not figure out why it kept squeaking/squealing after 30 seconds of running. I even did the big 'no/no' solution of over tensioning the belt just to see how it goes. After a few hours of scratching my head I figured I'd clean the old belt as much as I could to get the original brand of belt, to which I found out it was a 'Dayco' belt.
I then went to my local auto shop and bought a Dayco 15A1030 - Last one they had on hand in stock so was lucky!
I did not think it would make a difference but after closer inspection of both 'Gates' and 'Dayco' belts it amazed me that there actually was!
The Dayco 15A1030 was 2-3mm WIDER than the Gates 15A1030.

Installed the new belt to workshop manual specs and my Mu was back!

Hope this helps for any other blokes looking for this kinda info.

wider? I knew that some manufaturers measure the inside of the belt and some the outside meaning the 15 and 30 could well be the same but width as well. What ever happened to standardisation? This might be why my wizard belt needs adjusting every few months. Its got the adjuster so no drama but still a pain

Yeah, I was surprised at the difference because I was under the impression that they were all standardised. I wish I took photos before I installed it, I will when I get my new belts. I ordered another set of Dayco belts for the Mu for when I go out, always take a spare :)
