injector pump seal leaking

Postby RobDogg » Thu Sep 22, 2011 6:46 am

Hey Guys,

Awesome site and awesome information. Great work

I am replacing the seal on the front of the injector pump of my 1995 Bighorn (have got the seal already), Wondering if any one has done this before and offer some helpful tips or a rundown of how its done. Dont really want to dive into this completely blind as i Havent got a service manual.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks heaps

just one horrid thought.
By front seal do you mean the pulley seal? If so its a pump off and really you should be taking the pump to a diesel shop for a rebuild It costs less than 1 and a half credit cards The only to seals that can be done in place are the top cover and accelerator linkage.
Possibly not the answer you want

Thanks Guys,
Yes it would be the pulley seal, Thanks heaps for the engine manual. will help loads.
Brother in law has done his seal with pump on wasnt too much drama he said.
Will have a closer look and decide whether to go for it or take it to a deisel shop.
Thanks again for the info and help. Will keep you posted .....

4jg2 is the 3.1 turbo diesel, the injection pump is probably not the same, mine is also efi so it is different again from some of the other pumps around - mine is a 96 wizard

3.1 will fit if its a mechanical one. i am planning on putting a 3.1 on my 2.8 in the near future, they go like a bat outta hell lol.

if you have to remove the pump, wind the crank by hand and if ya look thru the pump pulley you will see a bolt hole in it, line that up with the threaded hole in the cover behind the pulley chuck a bolt in it, undo the pulley nut and remove pump. by doing it this way pump pulley stays in place and doesnt mess with ya timing. works a treat.

Hi Guys
Well new seal is in and has helped with the idle when cold(was surging, running very rough and smokey on start up) seems to have settled down quite nicely. Replaced the seal with injector pump in place. Set it all up with the bolts through the pulleys as suggested by mudslinger (thanks). Wasnt as bad job as I had imagined. The engine manual helped heaps to, Thanks Geeves.

any chnce i could get that engine manual geeves. also, quick question: does anone know the main differences between these two engines. as far as i can tell they are the same just one has a turbo. i have a 94 rodeo with a 2.8l td and i need to rebuild it as i suspect it has worn gudgeon pins/piston slap. there are kits available for both but from all the specs everything is the same between them. any ideas???

The 2.8 comes in two types belt or gear drive. Yours should be a gear drive. I would doubt it has gudgeon pins/piston slap issues. How many k's has it done?

ok. just got some info on the difference which is:
Out look of 4JB1T and 4JB1 piston are very similar. And piston OD,total height and ring set are the same.
The only difference is the pin hole. 4JB1T with pin is much bigger than 4JB1. Below are sizes for reference:
4JB1T PIN: OD=34mm Length=78mm
4JB1 pin : OD=31mm Length=71mm

External seals can be done in place but not a nice job. If its idling bad a pump rebuild is probably the best way to go

I considering doing a service of my pump. How hard is it to do. I figure like with anything attention care and a bit of precision and it shouldn't be to hard. Any advice for servicing it.

anything inside the pump I would suggest that if you have to ask how hard it is then it is too hard. Substantial mechanical knowledge required
