Radiator reservoir

Postby muzila » Sat Jul 18, 2009 9:18 am

I want to know if the reservoir for the radiatior is vitally improtant.

I know it holds liquid for the radiator but am unsure how it works.

I get it that when there is to much liquid in the cooling system it flows out to this tank, but does it flow the other way???

I ask because I want to get rid of it and just run the overflow hose down the side of radiator or somthing and off to the ground.

If there is water in the overflow bottle and the radiator run a lil low in water it will suck water back from the reservoir to the radiator.

There is a check valve built into the cap and it allows the coolant to flow back when they system cools and the liquids shrink, or if there is a leak it will keep it topped up.

So yes it is needed.

It can go anywhere but keep the pipe as short as possible. It needs easy access as well.
The radiator cap has 2 seals. The usual one opens at 15psi and lets water into the bottle. The second seal prevents anything getting between the cap and the top of the radiator so when the engine cools water is sucked back from this bottle.
When cold the bottle should be about half full
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

I got a little triangular one from pick-a-part and made a bracket to mount it between the radiator and airbox.

Doesn't hold quite as much, but it works well. Saves a ton of space on the right hand side of the engine bay as well (why I did it).

That is the best option, you deffinately need it, but it doesn't have to be that big.
