Bottom pulley

Postby walruz » Tue Jul 21, 2009 4:35 pm

Question for the tech's. What is the correct way to remove the bottom pulley? Has the large nut holding it on, not just the 4 small ones like some other models. Have read about holding with socket and breaker bar and using starter to undo... locking ring gear... Unfortunately I'm now in too deep to back out !!! Any advice most appreciated.

It should come off by just undoing the 4 small bolts.
If it doesnt the large bolt is torqued to 250 foot pound so expect it to be tight.
If you have a manual put it in 5th gear with handbrake on and undo with a long breaker bar. If auto you need to jam the ring gear somehow or try the starter trick
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

Thanks for the responses guys but I was hoping there was an easy way.......
Boritz : 4JG2
Demonic : Sssshhhhh secret trick from another forum. Not sure about actually doing it though.
Geeves : Access ring gear from starter?
Pig 75 : Have the 4 small bolts out but pulley is still held by central bolt which I know has keyway behind it.

Any more suggestions?

Cheers Glenn

The big bolt holds the boss only that' why there is a pin in between two of the four small bolts

I think that you will find that trick is for the single-centre-bolt V6 pulley.

OK it now seems that there is a pin that locates the pulley for timing purposes and can be quite tight. To recap, after staring at the nut and washer for some time (3 beers) with a mirror it didn't look like the pulley (hic) would slip past them. I had given it a touchup with a clubbie but now thanks David, I'm going to get a much BIGGER HAMMER and have another go

Cheers Glenn with the sledgie.

It will work, mate and I used the trick to get the pulley off my Mitsi V6, but there is room for a massive f*&k up, He told me bout one guy who got the direction wrong and one guy who actually started the car..... Both with really really bad results.
Cheers,
Andrew
