I took last week off work and did a bit of work on my Bighorn.Cam Belt, water pump, replace exhaust manifold gasket (and as it turned out exhaust manifold due to 3 cracks), This all went as well as I would expect my local mechinic wasn't too keen on doing the work but was happy for me to do it under his supervision. :D
The first big issue came when everything was back togeather and as I drove home I noticed it was making huge clouds of white smoke (hide the titanic size clouds) :o :o when ever I easied of on the gas pedal going up hill (not on the flat or down hill). this turned out to be that the injector pump needed advancing and the thermostat was jamed open so adjust and replace and all is good. Injector pump is looking like it is going gto need either rebulit or replaced and the radiator is not looking to good
Today we went up skiing at the local feild and then about a third of the way back down the mountain road I hear a sudden screaming noise coming from under the hood and a whole lot of smoke - seazed alternator and burnt belt.

My truck is now sitting on a car trailer out at the Mechinics and I am siting here trying to decide if it is worth fixing it now or replacing it with another one and then fixing the other one as and when I can ;)

Sounds like you have alot of issues there!! I'd ask your mechanic for a budget price to get it fixed and any thing else he thinks needs done, and then have a look around and see what you can buy for that sort of money. If your really lucky you may be able to find one that has been rolled/rear ended, but still has a good motor????
Oh how i miss my mu, the lux is just not the same :(

Strange for an alternator to seize suddenly. You didnt dislodge an oil line to the vacuum pump?
I would of cut the belt and still driven home although the lack of brake vacuum makes life a little fun especially on an icy skifield road. New alternator is around 700 but lots at the wreckers. Whats wrong with the injector pump? If there is noone who can do this in Nelson I would recommend the mechanic takes this out and sends to Diesel Doctors in Petone. If its just the seals they can be changed in place but not a nice job Second hand radiator shouldnt cost too much but a recore might not be that bad

Alternator belt runs the water pump, so I wouldn't recommend driving home with cut belt.

Well here is where I stand at the moment.
I replaced the alternator and played with the injector pump some more this at least got us going again and made some diference to the smoke. The only big new problem has been that it started to drink water so a new head and radiator has been ordered and I will start bolting it all back togeather latter this week.
It may have been cheaper to replace it instead of fix it but for the first time ever I have become attached to a vehicle

Re reading the first post I would be double checking the cam belt is on right. The injector pump shouldnt need to be touched after a cam belt. The symptoms of a head leak were there in the first post but easily missed. I had an escort that blew a head. First symptom was a faulty thermostat that wasnt faulty when tested. Problem was bubbles insulating the thermostat.
Once you start spending money its hard to know if the money that still has to be spent that if you knew the whole bill when you started you wouldnt of bothered.
I was in this position 2 years ago Spent 400 before the wof Got a 400 parts list from the mechanic then while putting these parts in found another 300 he had missed. If I had known all this was needed it would of gone to the wreckers but as a large amount had already been spent/wasted I had no choice but continue. In the 2 years since its been pretty much trouble free. Last wof all that was needed was to undisconnect the swaybar.
good luck

Well I stripped the old head off today and stripped it down. I found that I had blown the head gasket at the back and that the head had no fewer than 3 cracks in it!!
The new head arrives at the engine reconditoners tomorrow morning and and hopefully the valves I sent today will be there too so that he can seat them thens it just a mater of bolting it all back togeather again

Second hand motor could easily have a dodgy head as well.
