HELP!!!! 4JB1T rear main seal tool

Postby yoda2026 » Fri Jul 06, 2012 6:09 pm

i have just finished installing my freshly rebuilt 4jb1t into my holden rodeo
after taking it for its first drive i noticed oil pissing out of the bottom on the gearbox
and im guessing its the rear main seal

after consulting my local holden (arncliffe) they have informed me that it is a 2 piece main seal that requires a special tool to press it in
and a few years ago that tool got stolen and they havent replaced it

can this be done without the special tool or does anyone know of somewhere i can hire the tool
or a workshop with one in sydney

who rebuilt the engine and how did they fit it? My book shows this as a single normal round seal
Have you investigated other possibilities like a loose oil filter or leaking tappet cover. Both can run down and apear to come from in the bellhousing.

only 2 piece seals Ive ever played with you take sump off slide one section between the crank and block push the other section by hand into the sump then trim both bits flush (perfectly) with a craft knife then a little glue on the edges and assemble

i rebuilt the engine. i used a blunt chisel and tapped it into place slowly going around and around in a circle until it was home
the engine is currently loosing around 1Lt of oil over 20km of driving. i have degreased the engine and i am going to wait till tomorrow to start it up again and start trying to trace it again

the oil filter is tight and as far as i can see/feel the top of the engine is dry as a bone

I have my engine in bits at at the moment and it is 100% definitely a normal one piece seal. Nothing special about it at all.
Maybe it was damaged when installed, or they got the wrong one?
Did they replace the the u shaped seal for the sump?

possible damaged the seal but more likly its not square in the hole or you have a lip on the crankshaft. All will become obvious when you lift the motor

Sounds like you used a speedy sleeve. Or a cassette seal which would be unusual for an engine like this

Here's what I made when I did mine. This was on a 4JG2 but they will be the same.
I used "install tool" and the original flywheel bolts to evenly and squarely push the seal in.
Hope this helps.

the genuine seal as made by Isuzu/general motors has a wear surface that is part of the seal(a two piece seal)
after trying 2 different ways of putting it in without a tool i am at a loss of what to do

any idea where i can get my hands on one of these tools as every local holden and isuzu dont have the tools as the engine is TOO old
not to mention they quoted me $3000 to do the job

i am sick of pulling the engine out yes i have done this 3 times now and it keeps leaking
this is not only time consuming but also rather costly as the seals arent cheap

next time test the engine on a test stand and use an aftermarket seal. By running on a test stand you get to see where the leak is (can remove flywheel without disturbing engine)
Also inspect the crank for a score or lip where the seal runs.
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them
