shocking fuel economy

Postby jellis » Wed Aug 26, 2009 1:39 pm

I have just used half a tank of fuel in 200 kms its blowing heaps of blacky grey thick smoke has been puffing smoke out for a while now but it feels like there is no power, there seems to be a fair bit of oil in the standard intercoooler the and around the turbo charger with what looks like the turbo seals have gone. this has happened once before but i refiled it and all was good and normal back up to the 660kms i usually get out of her. is it possible its dodgy fuel or does it sound liek there is somehting wrong with it itss had 2600 spent on it in the last 2 months so im kind of getting sick of this.
can any one recomend me a decent mechanic in sydney who isnt full of shit about how hard parts are to find for it.
cheers josh
p.s. any one know where i can get a reconditioned turbo from. oh its a 2.8L with 197 thou on it
cheers, Josh

Is there much oil on the inlet side of the turbo? If there is not it might be a seal check the turbine shaft for movement it shouldn’t move much but spin free. Your intercooler might just be clogged check the pressure before and after the intercooler it should not drop more than 2psi

Best trick ive seen for cleaning the intercooler is to take it off Seal one end then power half a liter of kero in and shake it all around. Pour out and dry and its clean.
Unfortuanatly I think your looking at new injectors or a pump problem.

As long as the turbo spins fairly freely by hand with little or no movement the turbo is ok.
The oil comes from the cranckcase breather and may or may not be a problem. If the oil consumption is minimal do nothing If its high you can try a catch can. A compression test will tell if there is a real problem.
Every isuzu intake will have some oil in it. If the turbo was shot and the cause of poor ecconomy your performance will be bad as well

A closed/jammed 'exhaust flap'* will also cause poor economy, lack of power and LOTs of black smoke. Had this happen to me in July adding about 2 hours to my trip, thanks to the lack of power (the turbo can't really spin up with the flap closed) and the time on the side of the road trying to work out what was wrong.

* the butterfly valve that's only suppose to operate in very cold climates to quickly warm the engine.
