The 3.1 heads do crack for no obvious reason. Do check all the usual things for overheating and take the water pump off and check. Theres been a couple that have corroded the impeller off. Not sure if this applies to the 4jg2 as well but the famous toyota 2LT head problem is helped heaps by a big bore exhaust

Cant save the Stop Leak additive by itself, but you can just drain the radiator into a container, save it for next time.

stop leak won't hurt anything being in there unless you have a very high concentraton of it in there. Just drain the system and then flush.

pretty much, basically all pumps are the same, if they make strange nosies or you can wobble the shaft, then they need attention, for the cost of a water pump and for all the work you have done so far, i would be putting a new one in, would be a great shame if you got it all back together and the water pump crapped out a few hundred k's later.

3 things to watch on the waterpump
1 leakage
2 freeplay
3 condition of the impellor. This shouldnt happen unless the antifreeze is overlooked but there have been a few with rusted out impellors

pretty sure the whole truck was neglected. got it cheap. The body is in very good condition, same with interiour. But running gear..... well lets just say it doesnt have anything close to a service history since imported in 2001. dont think the oil had been changed for a good 20 000 km when I got it..... like I said it was cheap. so i dought it has ever had antifreeze in n.z .

Even though you may be on a budget, i'd be stretching out and getting a water pump to be safe, would be a shame for all the money you have just spent to go down the drain.

Its the one rule i have and will always work to, if i've taken something apart to do something and there is a seal or something important like a pump that is getting on a bit, i will replace it, and usually keep the old one for a spare.

Ok you win haha. I will put a new timing belt on. I would be stuped not to as its not far of needing replaced anyway. Will check the water pump for play, And if its ok then it will have to stay. Iv got a full motor for spare parts but its done more km than this one, So water pump would most likely be worse i think ? ..
thanks

thats true, they all wear out over time, i brought a couple of old motors a while ago, and it turns out that most of the stuff i wanted was stuffed anyways and they where a bit of a waste of money!!

make sure you replace the head bolts as the old one's will be stretched and won't clamp the head down enough
