Water leak between the timing cover and block

Postby mrMUMU » Fri Jan 24, 2014 4:47 pm

Hi people I'm in desperate need of help.

As above I have a water leak coming from the top of the timing cover, I amassing that this is the gasket, has anyone had the problem before?

Any ideas where to get the gasket?

Does the camshaft have to come out?

Etc etc

Any help will be appreciated

have had the same issue, its engine out, and fully strip it down to do the gasket, its a major and almost need a full bottom gasket set, have you tried stop leak in it and tighting the bolts at the top of the water pump

This is one of my posts from a wee while ago.

viewtopic.php?f=23&t=1668&hilit=+water+leak

The cam doesn't need to come out but you should do the seal and o-ring on the cam cover/retainer.

I ended up pulling the motor out and doing things properly. Sump off, front and rear crank seals, water pump, cam belt, tensioner and idler etc.

I got all my parts from various places as I progressed through the job as I was not in any great hurry.

Oddly the gasket between the timing cover is sometimes a metal gasket (mine was) and sometimes a paper gasket.

I also had two goes at getting the correct rubber sump seals that go around the crankshaft area. Seems to be two types.

What is the reason that it leaks water?

Welsh plugs behind the timing cover or just a seal

Mine was just the gasket between the timing cover and the engine block.

dont know if this is any help but my wizard had a leak between the housing the water pump bolts to and the block. My tame mechanic fixed it at the same time as doing the pump. I know he didnt take the engine out

Hi I have bought a gasket kit to repair a coolant leak between the cam cover and block housing, the gasket I got in the kit was a metal one I was expecting a paper one. Any thoughts

Mine was metal also.

I'm not confident that your Father-in-law will be able to fix this with the engine in place. I hope you can but....

From memory the housing is located on two dowels. There are also two studs downwards through the front of the sump. The housing can't go up, down or out until the sump is out of the way. Harry.

Yep Harry, that's how I remember it as well. Also the crankseal stops vertical movement.

I'm pretty sure that somebody on here has claimed to have done it in place though. I think that I'd just pull the motor again to do it.

Thanks for the replies, I think I'm going to have to pull it out but I'll let my father in law get frustrated first as he reackons it can be done (stubborn) I'll keep you posted and ad pics we will be tackling it next Sunday.

Either way I have plenty of room if I need to remove it.

The timing cover on my 1994 Japan spec trooper 3.1D was plastic the cam pulley has to come out to remove it however to access and replace the water pump I was able to remove the screws and just pull it out of the way.
