Alternator died 2.8 mu

Postby tonkamu » Mon Feb 05, 2018 6:56 pm

Well I was pulling out a fairly well bogged hilux with my runva winch for a good 1 minute + and I didn't have enough idle and my amp's must of been to high noticed my radio turned off sort of power cut, engine still ticked over tho.

Day after I notice now my charge is not going over 13. im only getting 12.XX to 11.XX. Have I blown my alternator. I also did get the engine bay covered in mud but normally my alternator kicks back into life after a dip in water/mud.

What am I looking at, new alternator? Could I get a bighorn 80 amp one and will it bolt straight into my 4jb1 engine on the same bracket?

Might of just glazed the brushes or maybe if you are real lucky just flattened the battery so far it will take a while to come back although 1 minute isnt much. However it doesnt sound good. The alternators from 2.8 bighorn or Mu are the same. I believe the plug is different on a 3.1 one but without 2 beside me I cant verify

2.8 and 3.1 alternators are all the same 3.1 the plug is on the outside (opposite to the 2.8) but still fits and works, 4jh1 rodeo alternator also fits brackets but has different plug

My 2.8 mu has a 50 amp alternator, is the 3.1 70 amps?

There are 50 70 and 80 amp alternator all will fit, other than the 4jh1 with a different main plug and is a 80 amp alt also

It was a very flat battery. alt sprung back to life. Why did it show charging 11-12 volts with a flat battery? I could still crank the engine and had lights.

If the battery was that flat it would take all the available charge at idle. At idle you might only be producing 5 amps from a 60 amp alternator. After a good run check again It should be 14 to 14.5 volts With modern batteries the higher the better Even 15 wont hurt
