Diagnose engine stall 4JX1

Postby bonsaiboy » Wed Mar 14, 2018 6:57 pm

Hi Team,
I'm a newbie to this forum, and have read through a lot of posts in the past few weeks. I haven't been able to diagnose the cause behind the issue my Bighorn has been experiencing- namely stalling suddenly while driving.
Background:
The truck in question was purchased in Jan 2018 from a chap whom had transplanted a reconditioned engine (with 10,000km) into a reasonably tidy body (2001 LWB UBS73). Apparently the engine has had a new block, new cylinder head, rings, bearings, new wiring harness, and new ORPS. The TPS looks new too. New fully synthetic oil, and a new Ryco Z600 main oil filter.

The conditions that it stalls during seem to be quite consistent: i.e. warm engine, decelerating, and braking. This has proven to be quite alarming the first time it happened, embarassing  on the second time, and dangerous the third time (while travelling on a multi lane carriageway, approaching a roundabout). Needless to say, my wife (bless her) is not particularly impressed with my choice of vehicle.

Once the truck has stalled, I turn it over, and it sounds as though it has no fuel, so I've had a go at bleeding it at the hand primer pump, and then restarting, with mixed success. However, sometimes it starts back up without needing to be bled. Another symptom I've noticed is that if I stop it, then try to restart a couple of minutes later, it can take 5-6 seconds of cranking to get it to fire up.
I have not purchased a Tech2 scanner yet, but had it scanned by a diesel specialist -who could not find any fault codes.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
