I looked at these when I did the radiator in my wizard. Local radiator shop warned me away from them as cheap made in China. I bought his at 100 more and guess where it was made? However buying local meant warrunty claims easier if there are and and they even popped the top tank to remove filings after a head swap caused the joint to leak for free. Especially good as it was Xmas eve

There is a test that can be done with the radiator , some call it a tk test , that checks for combustion gasses in the coolant, giving an indicator of head gasket failure into the cooling system.

I had this done on 3 4jg2 powered isuzu before I purchased one.
I bought the engine that showed no change whatsoever.
a 100psi leak down may not show up distortions due to an overheat episode.

airlift airbags in rear springs running 5-25psi, so far worked a treat, no longer bottoms out with 5 people and gear and still doesn't rattle me one up and empty. Watch the us paddle switches as my first pair leak. I've air electric replacements yet to fit.

Hi Guys

Only 14 months later and I've finally got onto the 4jb1 engine again..
Working less hours after lockdown so I've got a bit more free time..

The backstory is.. Missus was driving along and suddenly lost a bit of power, engine started to heat up so she stopped to let it cool down..
She then started it up and drove for 20 minutes to get to a safe place to stop so we could tow it.. it was making a ticking/tapping sound, felt under powered and getting hot..

So finally I've taken the head off.. and I cant see anything obvious in there, I gave the pistons a wriggle for play and the second one back has a bit of up and down movement.. if you cycle the engine around after the piston has reached the top and is on its way back down you can push it down about a mil.. other pistons no play..

I'm in the process of removing the sump to see what I find underneath.. I've released all the 12mm bolt I can see plus two 14mm & two 17mm from the gearbox..
the sump is still stuck there, It does have a load of red gasket sealant on it gluing it in place, I was wondering if there is anything else I need to undo first??

Also it doesn't look like its going to come out the bottom without sliding the gearbox back or removing front axle.. does anyone have any advice on which is going to be easier??

Thanks very much for your help

Sump will come off. It is only red silicone as a seal and once you remove the crossmember between the front wheels there is nothing in the way. Had to replace the sump on my 4jg2 that way. Started work on it 2pm the day before jumping on the ferry to head south. Poured oil in at 5pm. It had stripped the drain plug hole and I was meant to be taking the other car until it split a radiator tank. Just a perfect way to start a xmas holiday.

Cheers Alan

Ha that seems to happen to me every time.. one car goes off the road and then all the others want to join in.. I had 3 car either not going or not road legal at once at Xmas.. good job we decided to stay home this Xmas ha...

Sweet so If I get something into the red siliconed joint to separate them then it should come off.. good to know.. I didn't realise that stuff stuck so good I did give it couple of whacks and levered it around a bit, I gave up before I put too much pain on it just in case I was missing something..

I'll keep you updated
Cheers

When you put it back dont scrimp on the sealant quality. The book recommends 3bond which is about $50 a tube. My tame mechanic (before I moved) said put it on leave it a few minutes to skin then assemble.

There are 2 12mm bolts inside the bellhousing either side of the crank aswell dont bar it off and break the sump, also 2 locating dowels

Best and easiest way to to pull the engine out, then you can sit it on it deck upside down and work on the bottom of it

Good to know cheers Alan prob worth the $50 if it does the job!!..

Hi Rob, inside the bell housing?? so with the engine in place I'll have to unbolt transmission from block and slide it out of the way to get to those 2x 12mm bolts ??
Its parked up under some trees at work not an easy place to get the engine out but if it comes to it I'm sure I'll find a way...

Cheers

Yes will have to remove front diff assembly and axles and gearbox to get the sump off in place, you will get a far better job done if you take the engine out, I dont know why they put 2 bolts inside the bellhousing have thought about drilling 2 holes in the bellhousing and using a long extension and 12mm socket but never been brave enough

Ok cheers guys
I got that small cover off and cant see much in there so looks like the engine is coming out.. might have to use a wheel loader to pick it up but if I get the bonnet off should be ok..

I'll have to get block out anyway if I do end up replacing it..
I want to pull engine apart and see if I can fix it first.. more for the learning then anything else..

cheers

Hi Guys

I finally got the engine out and the oilpan/sump off
There was play in one of the cylinders so trying to see what it was..

I've found the culprit. split bearing.. so would need to get crank machined?? does anyone know what that would cost roughly??

Its looking like a big job!

Cheers

getting the crank machined will depend how worn it is, cost wise last crank I got ground was around $150, if you get stuck I have a good bottom end I stripped a complete engine due to low compression (had broken rings) or have complete engines still, are you running 4jb1 2.8 or 4jg2 3.1?

Hi Rob
It doesn't look too bad the rest of the bearings dont seem to have any play I'll have to take the whole thing out and have a proper look.. If I do get machined I would need to get oversize bearings from somewhere??
If I replaced with a good condition crank would I replace the bearings with standard ones ??

Cheers

If there are any marks on the crank they probably wont machine out and the crank is meant to be nitride hardened. Just looking at that bearing I would take Robs offer of the second hand crank. The question though is where did the bits go and what other damage has been done to bores cam etc. You know the engine has been cooked so you should also consider second hand engines or if its worth fixing. 4k buys a nice looking ubs69 bighorn on trademe.

Hi Geeves

Yes probably the sensible option ha..
Quite keen to get this one going if I can, as much for the challenge as anything else.

I'm hoping to pull the crank out at weekend and I can inspect the pistons, barrels etc at same time and then make a call.

I'd like to get away with a second hand crank, new bearings, rings and a bit of a hone in the barrels and put it all back together with new gaskets, seals, belts and a water pump
But there is going to be a lot of finger crossing there!!

Cheers

whatever you do don't touch the bores with a hone, they are chrome and will burn oil like nothing, easiest is new piston and liner kit
