Turbo noise/whine

Postby Lagwagoning » Thu Apr 12, 2018 12:50 am

4JB1-T engine in 2000 rodeo
Have slowly developed a whine coming from the turbo, originally though it was a bearing type grinding noise but have ruled that out.
Took the belts off, fan etc.. and still the sound.
I believe its the compressor wheel fins, they feel rough when running my finger across them. Look like the edges are finely serrated.
Theres no play in the wheel/shaft.
I'd liken the sound to a quieter muted air raid siren...one of those old manual wind-up ones.

Engine has 340K on it and this is the original turbo.
My question is: is it risky leaving as is?
Car has boost and power, havnt noticed any drop in power.

Regards
Stan

Its one of those things how long is a piece of string. My 4jb1 turbo lasted a year with a lot of play and smoking, only changed it when I couldn't boost 17 anymore.

The noise a turbo makes is normally higher pitched than that. It could be wear in the impellor and as long as its spinning ok with no play I would leave it till it gets too loud
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them
