You say it does not warm up,do you have good heat out of your heater? you can't trust the factory heat guage, if you get good heat from heater you're tempeture is probably OK, You can adjust the fuel without taking the pump off, first tho how long have you had the car and has it always had the heavy black smoke? it could be just a real dirty air filter causing the smoke,EG engin can't suck enough air so it pulls more fuel in causing smoke.

If its running too cold the only thing it can be is the themostat is stuck open, I can't think of anything else it could be, that could also cause your black smoke. But you say you replaced your thermostat, sorry its got me Colin, maybe one of the other chaps can come up with an idea?

Water must be bypassing the thermostat. Check all the hoses are in the correct places.
knock the fuel back a little to stop the smoke. can be done in place

Any chance its a timing belt on the way out causing the injection timing to be retarded and getting some "afterburning"?

James Whyte had this problem A while ago. It was something to do with the aftermarket thermostat. Thermostat opens at 82 so if its not opening and water is circulating the radiator then water is getting past the thermostat. Test the thermostat first and look for corrosion
