2.8 4JB1T general info needed

Postby Thegary » Wed Aug 22, 2018 12:04 pm

Hi all I have a 4JB1T that came out of a Mustang skid loader. This engine is not available here in the USA except in some off road equipment. I do not know much about this engine but some parts do seam to be available here in the USA. I can not find what the fuel pump pressure needs to be for this engine to run right.

In its present form the tag on the engine says it is 83.2hp . I have a turbo coming that states it is 100 hp. I am not wanting to mod it much . It was missing the Turb and a starter when I got it so I have both items coming. The turbo I believe is just a generic stocker. I just want to make it run dependably but if I could maybe get it to 120hp or so reliably without droping a lot of money in it I might entertain doing that.

I am also looking for an SAE flywheel that will fit it. I might use it to power a chipper but the places I have contacted here in the states have almost no info or contacts for parts for it.

The other possibility is that I might want to put it in a small pickup like a ford ranger if I can find a trany that I can connect to it. Anything you can suggest or steer me to would help me. Thanks in advance

Maybe look at some Isuzu Amigo's, Rodeo's and Honda Passport as they sold them in Americas. The last 2 will have 4jb1 engines, amigo is petrol but might share parts?.

You have some Amigos and Rodeos over there with the 4ja1 engine. These Transmissions will bolt straight up Otherwise some small isuzu trucks Anything with a 4j... engine. The turbo version is 84kw or roughly 100 horsepower. they take tuning well to well above the figures you are looking for.

There have not been any diesel cars or small trucks sold by Isuzu here in the states since the late 80's. Is there any isuzu gas engine that a flywheel and trans would work with the 4JB1T.

the 4ze1 has the same gear box but the starter is on the other side. if you can move it to the other side it might work

I found more info. The turbo that came from this engine is a RHB5 . This seems to be bigger than the turbos that come on the 2.8 in a vehical. If I purchase this stock turbo for this engine and use it in a truck or a Trooper would it give me too much turbo lag because of being a larger turbo? I would not get an IHI turbo . The Mustang skid loader dealer here want $2800 for the stock turbo. I will probably get a generic RHB5 to put on it. The one for this from OEM is not water cooled but most of the generic street application turbos are water cooled. I will probably set it up for 14lbs of boost and adjust the fuel to suite. The engines stock timing is 15 degrees. I was thinking of moving the timing to 16.5 or 17 degrees . With a 2.5 exhaust system. I can get an RHB5 turbo used on mid 90's diesel 3.1Troopers for about $200. A generic for this off road application is about $900.
In a skid loader the engine runs at a set rpm for hrs on end and lag is of no concern but in an on road application it would be.

RHB52 IHI is what comes on 2.8 4jb1t here, retail is 700 U.S for OME new or 100 U.S for second hand. They spool at 1100rpm with bit more fuel. You can find this kind of information on this website if you use the search.
