Low Compression on No4

Postby Webster1955 » Mon Jun 17, 2019 6:44 pm

I have a 1996 3.1 which has done 197000km. It has recently developed a slight knock when under load and a compression test shows no4 cylinder is down to 300 with 1,2 and 3 all 420.
any ideas where to start looking

Could be a tapet that needs adjusting but unfortunately my money is lower down in the engine. Has it ever ingested water? Could have a bent con rod. Next bad rings although they dont knock. Leaky head gasket or head although thats not how they normally go Cracked piston Worn bearings or gudgeon pin scored bore. Try a small squirt of oil down the hole and retest compression.
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them
