What to replace when pulling the motor?

Postby wgripp » Wed Jul 22, 2020 5:42 am

Good afternoon from the USA!

I have a 1991 2.8 Turbo Diesel MU. I'm asking my mechanic to replace the following parts:

Clutch:
- Upgrading to the clutch and flywheel from a 3.1L 4JG2-T.
- Ordered new Flywheel from Japan
- Ordered Exedy Heavy Duty Clutch Kit (GMK-6907HD) from Australia.
- Steve Sinton at Isuzu Parts Specialist Ltd let me know the pivot socket on the clutch fork is prone to crack. So, I also ordered a replacement clutch fork assembly from Japan. (I assume this includes the pivot socket.)
- Are there any other parts I need for this upgrade?

Clutch hydraulics:
- Ordered a new slave cylinder and a new master cylinder from Japan.

Engine mounts:
- I'm also going to ask my mechanic to replace the 2x engine mounts and the 1x transmission mount
- Do any companies sell polyurethane engine and transmission mounts for Isuzu MUs, or is rubber my only option?

Seals:

(FYI, the part numbers in the below links are not correct. I'm just using the diagrams for reference.)

-My mechanic recommends I replace the "rear main seal" while replacing the clutch. I assume the SEAL, OIL, REAR is the "rear main seal." (The seal is #6 here: https://opel.7zap.com/en/car/u92/e/7/23-0/ ) Is this the correct seal?
-Also, the last time I was under the truck, I noticed my oil pan gasket was seeping oil. (GASKET, OIL PAN TO CASE is #20 here: https://opel.7zap.com/en/car/u92/e/7/9-0/ )
-While my mechanic is replacing these seals, should I also ask him to replace the following?
- SEAL,RING,CRANKSHAFT,REAR (#7 here: https://opel.7zap.com/en/car/u92/e/7/9-0/ )
- SEAL, OIL, FRONT (#5 here: https://opel.7zap.com/en/car/u92/e/7/9-0/ )
- SEAL,OIL, CRANKSHAFT, FRONT (#6 here: https://opel.7zap.com/en/car/u92/e/7/9-0/ )

I ask this question because I'm not sure if these can (or if these should) be replaced when the mechanic removes the clutch and removes the engine from the truck to replace the engine mounts. I don't know if now is the time to complete this work or if replacing these is a bigger job that involves removing the engine timing cover, crankshaft, etc.

Are there any other gaskets or parts I should replace at this time?

Is there any other work that should be done while the engine is out of the truck and this work is being done?

Do Isuzu and/or Fel-Pro sell gasket sets and Fel-Pro gasket sets that include all the seals I need?

Thanks!

why not just machine the flywheel
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

rubber is best for engine mounts except in race cars where often the mounts are steel. Solid mounts will shake your fillings out at idle

Geeves,

The flywheel and clutch from the 3.1 Turbo Diesel are larger, so they are considered an upgrade.

Thanks for letting me know about the solid engine mounts. I would think polyurethane mounts last longer than rubber (even though they would be stiffer and rattle the truck more).

Thanks again!

Andy,

Thanks for letting me know! Does the engine need to be removed to replace the valve stem seals?

Thanks again!

No. Best with the head off, but it can be done with the head still on.
