2.8 alternator

Postby Akiko » Mon Mar 08, 2010 11:21 pm

Ok what am I missing here??? Is there a sequence for getting the right tension on the belt off the alternator. The adjustment is at max and it is nowhere close to tight :?: in anticipation

2 possibilities.
1 did you miss the water pump pulley
2 do you have the right belt
Match the number on the old belt to the new one Also compare the length and thickness
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

Hey I had to replace my alternator (4jb1 UBS55) and got one at pick a part but it looks like an 80A one and the vacuum pump looks thicker I think its off a later model bighorn although the vehicle I took it from was the same as mine. Should this still be ok?

If it is a number like ALT7055R-80 then it should be ok but the plugs might be different. If not you may be ok but its more than likely an aftermarket replacement meant for a different vehicle. If this is the case the wiring might of been altered.
In most cases where non standard alternators have been used they have been petrol ones mounted where the aircon was and keeping the old alternator just for the vacuum.

I replaced my dead 50amp alternator with an 80amp alternator. I had to swap the vacum pump over to make it work but the wireing was all the same. I thought the pumps where the same for all the motors but I guess not.

Im now wondering if the 4jb1 belt from the Rodeo is the same one for the 4jb1 Mu, as at full adjustment the belt is not tight and the adjusting bolt will snap if more pressure is added. Does anyone know the number of the Mu alternator belt?

Lets make sure were all on the same page
On the front of the motor there are 3 belts.
2 identical belts go round the air con and power steer unit These should be Power Steering & Air con belt......................13A1525. The adjustment for these is to loosen the 2 14mm bolts on the power steer pump to head then wind the long 14mm bolt to spread the 2 parts of the bracket. Then tighten
behind this and lower down a shorter wider belt goes round the alternator and water pump. This is a Fan & Alt Belt x1.....................................17A1055
Adjustment is to loosen the pivot at the bottom of the alternator and the top bolt in the slotted bracket at the top then gently leaver the alternator away from the block and tighten. Its another knuckle scraping process.
Not all models of Rodeo had aircon and power steer so they might be the wrong belt

i changed mine recently and found the alternator easier to adjust with a block of wood and a big screwdriver...
hold pressure on teh screwdriver and gently tap the wood ontop of the alternator housing (somewehre solid) and easier to tighten that way... the pivot was easiest to get at from the bottom, and the front belts seem to be easier to get on if you put them over the air con and p/s and then pull it around the bottom pulley from underneath
