Heater Unit Removal

Postby sanramonrover » Sat May 15, 2010 12:36 pm

My ride is a 1991 KB diesel pickup.

I have downloaded the service notes from the NZ site, plus I have a Haynes manual. The Isuzu manual says you have to remove the dash complete to remove the air conditioning unit between the blower fan and the heater unit.

The Haynes is almost useless, but says it IS possible to remove the a/c unit from under the dash without removing the dash.
My a/c unit is so blocked by dirt and junk it has to come out.

What is anyone's experience? Thanks

I have replaced the a/c unit under the dash in the MU it's not hard but the MU is right hand drive. Don't know if left hand drive is any different.

I've removed all the A/C stuff from the engine bay, can you remove the A/C things under the dash while leaving the heater & fan units in?

The list goes on.

The only hard part of removing the A/C unit under the dash is getting to the 2 screws/bolts on top of the unit. You don't have to remove the dash at all. I ripped all mine out and just put the shell back so the heater air could still flow.

Great replies guys. Sounds like it shouldn't be impossible without taking out the dash. The previous owner has already taken the compressor out, but left all the rest. I think I will take the guts out of the cabin chiller unit, remove the lines and the bits from front of the grill.

You may recognize me from previous postings as spitsnrovers. For some reason I could not log back in, so had to re register.

You will find it easyer if you remove your glovebox. I am asuming here that the 91 KB pickup is the same as the 91 MU inside here. If so just use a set of plyers and squish the plugs inside at the bottom of g/box and gently pull out. the g/box then comes out if I member correctly. Then there is some screws holding the bottom cross part of the dash in and then your cookin with gas!!!

Well, taking the a/c chiller unit out was much easier than I'd expected. Discovered that it pulls out without disturbing either the fan unit or the heater core unit. Nice touch!

Found the a/c core so plugged up with everything there wasn't a breath of air getting through. The rest of the plumbing goes tomorrow.

Here in the tropics heaters aren't used much, so the previous owner cut out the heater hoses! Just hope the fresh air will keep the humidity off the windshield on the rainy humid nights.
