Alternator Brush

Postby daone » Thu Sep 23, 2010 11:17 am

HI all

Is anyone have any idea where I could buy the alternator brush please?
Main alternator is playing up. Yesterday all the warning lights except oil has came on at low RPM. If I rav the engin to 1700Rpm and above, the warning lights goes off and the alaternator was starts to charging. Soon after the Rev come around 1000 then the warning lights come on again which means the alternator is not charging again.

I have two thoughts here,

1: May be the alternator belt is loose
2: The alternator brush needs replacing

Will tighten the belt in the weekend to see which problem might be.

I am just thinking about where can I purchase the brush. Please hlep.

Appreciate your time mates

Cheers

i found the easiest way to get to the alternator is lying down underneath the car with your legs facing the front. this way u can bend your arms the right way to unbolt the pin underneath it

Its not that bad. Remove battery unbolt aircon with bracket and place unit on battery tray. Dont undo hoses. You can now get at the top bolt then climb under to get the bottom. Installation is everything in reverse. Tensioning the belt use a tyre lever or similar to lever the alternator away from the block while tightening the bolt. Having 3 hands makes this easier but a second body gets in the way
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

Hi all it's time to update what I have done.

I went to Pan Pacific in auckland bought carbon brush (75018), alternator back plate seal, oring sits the vacuume pump to the alt back cover and regulator (75042) for 69 inc gst.

They also have a complet regulater with brush kit which you can just solder the old one off and sold this one on.

But it is eaier to brinig your alternator to them as a reference for the parts

I will upload a photo once I got my celphone usb cable.

Hello daone.

I'm curious as to what your symptoms were.

My Mu has just started over charging, as in the volt meter goes off the gauge 16V+
I've started driving with the headlights and air con kept on and that is keeping it under control for the moment. My dash lights haven't all come on, so the warning light relay is still good.

I'm wondering wether or not I should attempt to repair the alternator or buy a new one.

Hi there, sorry about this late reply as I was doing the front brake on my wife's car.

Anyway, I did price the new alternator at Civic Whole Sale , the price is above $400. I have seen one of our member bought a brand new alternator from Ebay which is around $300, you can do the internal search: key word alternator.

I think the problem cause the alternator to overcharging is the alternaor regulator, on my one it was faile due to a back cover seal fail which allows engine oil from the vacuum pump into the regulator chamber.

For the regulator you have 2 option, one is just buy a brush & regulator kit, which you can just solder it on, the other option is buy brush & regulator and install it, this really takes time. You do not have to worry about replace the bearing if they not making noise, as you will need a small beraing puller to get the bearing off.

If you decide to do it your self, make sure you do get the back cover seal, and the oring(inbetwee the back cover & the vecuum pump).

The hardest part for me was position the brush and refitting the altnator back cover, as there are so many studs you need to drag them in to the right position.

Good luck
