checking charge relay

Postby kcsoft » Thu Nov 25, 2010 9:55 pm

does anyone know how to test the charge relay on a 93 mu outside the car (to confirm alternator is stuffed or not)?????? the system stopped charging, resulting in a flat battery this afternoon.

removed battery lead while running and engine died. just want to confirm this is an alternator problem before i go ripping it out of the car!!

Rodeo/Jackaroo alternators are a straight bolt in unit. No need to change anything.
There is a good chance you have destroyed the alt by running with the bat disconnected

so jackeroo/rodeo ones off a 2.8 will fit??

how would I have destroyed it by removing the battery while running? assuming the alternator wasn't already stuffed?

Older alternators used the battery to control voltage Newer ones have a voltage regulator. If voltage goes to high the stator etc burn out. Its always been good practice to not run an alternator without a battery. This is still true but dont know if its still as dangerous. I wouldnt do it

Yes but i would use one of a 3.1 jackaroo as it is a 80A and the 2.8 is 50A

wiring on rodeo one is a problem, plugs are different (same number of wires) and wire colors are different.

extra hoses on the vac pump and the hose for oil is a different diameter to the mu one.

i think i'll take it to an auto electrician and see if the bushes, slip rings, etc... can be replaced any idea on what that would cost???

truly? thats quite interesting pig75 as the rodeo one i had (now returned) had different set-up on the vac pump, most fittings could be changed but i had problems with the line that goes to the bottom of the engine. different size hose etc. also it had a big rectangular plug instead of the smaller 3 pin plug. i took it back because it was too much hassle so now i'm going to take the original to an auto sparkie and get it repaired/renewed i'm hoping its just brushes and not a diode pack/rectifier!!

anyways anyone had an alternator repaired?? just want to know cost and what needed replacing.

cheers guys you've been really helpful so far!

okay, an update for anyone interested...

i got a new 70A one from ebay, it arrived yesterday.

all is exactly the same except i needed to swap the vac line setup (no biggie). so pig75 my apologies you are correct, the rodeo one is EXACTLY the same. dunno what the wreckers one was off!!
the old one had burned out a stator winding, taking the rectifier with it so too expensive to repair.

the only problem i have now is the auto electrician has lost the plug with the three pins in it and i need to know what goes where. on the isuzu there are 3 wires. the centre one being black and a bigger gauge then the other two white ones (with a stripe i presume). i can imagine the black one being ignition but what are the other two???

I looked in the TF rodeo manual but cannot make any sense of it at all. I also need a pinout of the hitachi alternator which i cannot find anywhere.

The S terminal should be a 2mm wire white with black stripe
The L terminal should be a 0.85mm wire white with green stripe
The IG terminal should be a 0.85mm wire black with yellow stripe

It was from a trooper manual
I think it's this one http://daemon4x4.org/portal/downloads.php?dcid=5&p=3
(Trooper workshop manual - US LHD models. Engine types: 6VD1, 6VE1, 4JG2, 4JX1.)
