Adding Daytime Running Lights for DOT Approvals in Canada

Postby BighornBob » Sun Dec 12, 2010 1:16 pm

Hi all,

I have brought a JDM Bighorn 3.1 TD in to Canada and have one more item required prior to gaining licensing approval. That thing is the addition of a Daytime Running Lights module. I have obtained a module from Hamsar (http://www.hamsar.com) that I have mostly figured out except for the one last item and that is: Where the heck is the Oil Pressure Switch on this engine. I have scoured the manual until my eyes are crossed and just can't locate it and being a neophyte with engines especially diesel's I can't seem to locate it in the engine bay.

What I need is a + (positive) voltage when the oil pressure is up so that it triggers the DRL Module to turn on the lights. Where can I get this signal?

Help please! And most appreciated for all the expert knowledge I have been gleeming from this sight.

Thanks in advance, Bob

The oil pressure switch is just in front of the starter motor there are 2 senders the small one is for the light the bigger one is for the gauge
you will need to use a relay

Thanks for the help!

I was thinking that one side of the switch is grounded and the switch opens with oil pressure to make the light go out. If I put the sensor on the side of the switch that connects to the light I will get a good positive signal when the oil pressure switch opens which is what I need.

Does that make sense?

Cheers, Bob

That might work. You might need a diode in the line to stop feedback

I am hoping that the feedback will be eliminated with this unit as it is "solid state" lol, but I will be prepared to insert a diode if there is any problems.

Thanks again for your help! Bob

do they have to run only when the engine is running or can you do as above straight from the key. Hela make a very nice day running lamp in led so it wont run the battery flat
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

Doing it from the key would be acceptable but I really don't want the lights on if the engine is not running and the vehicle already has Cibie driving lamps so I was not planning on adding more. Must be the Scotsman in me, unwilling to spend on something already covered. :)

Thanks everyone for the help, I will update results when finished.

Just an update, for those that may be interested.

I was able to break into the wiring loomb and splice into the wire from the oil pressure switch where I obtained a nice signal to hit the DRL controller trigger with.

The engine starts, oil pressure comes up to switch set point and DRL's magically come on. There is even a nice little delay after shutdown where the lights stay on (part of the controllers features).

If anyone is interested in schematic notes, I can probably pdf them and pass them along. I think the hardest part was finding a spot on the right side of the engine to mount the controller, sheesh they have packed a lot in there.

Thanks again for the help with where to look.
