Problems with 1987 TF

Postby Rodnoneous » Mon Jul 18, 2011 12:29 am

G'day All,

First post on CII. I've tried a few quick searches but can not find anything specific to my problem. The car is a Holden Rodeo which is what the Isuzu TF was sold as in Australia. I've just got this car from my father-in-law and it needed some TLC after being in storage for a year. The registration has expired which means we have to fix all of the mechanical problems prior to getting it re-registered again. Luckily this isn't my only car but this car will be used for spotlighting out on the farm.

A have a few various electrical problems.

1) When the headlight on button is depressed, nothing happens however when the highbeam is pulled (using the indicator stalk) the headlights come on. I have a feeling this is an earthing problem but do not even know where to start in terms of winding the earth cable and securing it to the correct position.

2) Blower for the demister/defogger doesn't work when engaged by the controls. Will work when I attach a 12v battery directly to the blower. Reads -0.6v through the cables that lead to the mechanism. I have a feeling this is a fuse issue or may be because of excessive dust that is preventing proper connection in the back of the mechanism.

Appreciate any guidance with these issues and an electrical schematic for this vehicle if anyone has one.

Still having a problem with the headlights. High beam working but no low/main beam. Park Lights work.

Any ideas?

Just multi-metered the sockets with the respective lights turned on.

No volts for main beam. 11v for highbeam. Checked the fuses and there isn't any that are burnt out. Its either a wiring or relay problem. I've checked the TF manually that was sent to me however none of the fuse boxes represented are similar to mine.

Check the plug that goes to the combination switch on the steering column for burnt pins

Hey Pig. Pins in the combo switch are perfect. No dust and definitely not burnt out.

Lights work when attached directly to the battery. I'm still worried about the relay, despite trying other identical relays in the same relay slot and having the same problem. We're at the point now wheree we are just going to wire the lights to a switch in the cabin (with a 20 amp fuse in the circuit).

Let you know how it goes!

Have you put the multimeter on the slots for the relay to see if power and switching signal are getting there?

Do you have a fuse box under the bonnet as well as the one under the dash

Fuse box under the bonnet and dash. In frustration I've wired main beam, park lights and high beams to a switch in the cabin (15a fuse in each circuit).

Only issue remaining is an earthing problem still. Indicators on the left hand side blink fast. Volt meter and dash lights dim significantly when the indicators flash on.

Pits indicated this is the only problem, no issue with the actual wiring for the lights. Think it is auto sparkie time...
