Dead battery - drain?

Postby Burty » Wed Jul 20, 2011 6:13 am

Howdy - I got a new excide battery on friday for my 95 MU (correct specs) - it wasnt that great for a few mornings then yesterday it was totally flat (I live in Queenstown, so frosts are the norm), I brought a recharger and it refused to charge it, so took it back and replaced it for another new one, this morning that was virtually dead also.

Ive checked that the light in the boot wasnt on, but my next conclusion is that the MU must be draining it overnight.

Any ideas?

First question is....Why did you put new battery in in the first place..
If the alternator is playing up they can drain a good battery over night.
leave it over night once fully charged , but un hook one of the battery leads...Or start truck and put a volt meter over the battery and see what voltage you have..Once truck has been going for a minute or two.Voltage should be above 13 volts at 1500 revs....any where up to 14.6.....
If the battery voltage when trucks not going and battery voltage when truck is only goes up a bit its the alt..
Oh and check or replace the charge relay.........
Oh well, can some one hook up the winch i cant open my door !!!!!!!!!

Cheers, the previous battery was on its fifth year and was getting a bit gutless on frosty mornings so figured it best to get a replacement before I get stuck somewhere dodgy with no juice. Good advice though, I will trouble shoot the alternator.

Hmmmm - yep, end of day, heading home, no juice whatsoever - hooked up the spare 'fully charged' battery with the jumper leads - no joy . . . . . MU dead in the water so off to the pub - any insights remain gratefully accepted?
