Engine wont start

Postby liamg » Wed Nov 09, 2011 5:28 am

Engine turns over no problem, started as an intermittent problem (happened about 3 times) but try a few times and it would be fine. Now it just wont start and seems as if its getting no fuel so I think it may be electrical, a soleniod maybe??
Fourtunately it was parked in driveway. Its an auto 1999 Isuzu bighorn. Any help Appreciated. Thanks

Vehicle: 92 Bighorn, just died and old Trooper. Now got 99 auto Bighorn but will be selling soon as I dont like auto's. Just got an older 95 Bighorn manual but think it will need some time and money spent, already got a leak in exhaust manifold. It never ends.

Working on the assumption that you have a diesel -
1) There is a fuel cut-off solenoid as part of your Injector pump, it needs about/at least 8-9 volts to work from memory.
2) Fuel filter blocked.

Has it had any work done to it recently?

Took it in to garage in the end, there was a faulty pressure sensor that gets oil pressure from down the bottom somewhere, had to take sump off to replace some O rings and also replace the sensor under rocker cover some where, the term rail or common rail was mentioned. Looks like its going to cost me about $750 which includes oil change and 2 filters. I will post any other details I get after tomorrow in case it helps anyone else in the future. For sale shortly if anyone interested. Thanks for your help.

with so many vehicles please tell us which one in the future. I think we were all thinking about your 92 and never even noticed the 99

Last line of the first post clearly says 99 auto, my second post says it is a 4JX1, I thought that engine came a lot later than 92. Not sure what else I could have done except maybe listed in opening line, which I will try to remember for next time.

Must admit that I initially missed that your vehicle was a 99, my bad. I had looked sideways to your vehicle description in your profile and had also mistakenly assumed we were discussing the 92. Duh.
Good to see your problem has been resolved though.

The only good thing i have heard about the 4jxl engines is they make good target practice for a 460 weatherby mag thats what mate of mine done with his out of his jackaroo.
He got so peed of with it took it out and put it out of its misery nice big holes through it and dropped a v6 in his jack no more problems any more even if he now has a petrol motor in it.

4jx1 is a nice engine when going properly. Power to die for and more economical than the already miserly 4jb1 and its in a much heavier body. Problem is that every now and then it eats all your fuel savings in repairs

I dont know about it running properly his will never again 500 grain solids through the block will never run again thats for sure.
He still says the price of ammo was worth it but cheaper than the more money he could of wasted on that lemon of a motor never come across somebody with so much hate for a engine he still curses it.

Think I have the same problem. Try and try and she won’t start then of a sudden she will start. Did you ever get it fixed?

a trick I use is to watch the exhaust pipe while cranking , if no smoke stop cranking as it's not getting fuel
