No warning lights came on during the drive to work. Fingers still crossed.

No warning lights on the way home either.

Thanks for the posts.

I have a similar issue with my 95 bighorn. However I do not get any warning lights. the voltage meter shows 12v most of the time but if i nurse the truck up to speed it can remain at around 13-14v for some time then drop off to 12v. the alternator is only 13 months old. I have tried replacing the blue relay plug with the original (new one went in same time as new alternator). The belts seem tight enough, however currently only running one A/C, P/S belt as one broke, and waiting on two new ones to arrive. The alt belt is brand new.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

ok, would you recommend re-packing the original one or purchase another new alternator, who would you recommend in the wellington area to do this?

Cheers

At 13 months old I would be talking to your supplier first unless you have used off road. If used off road its worth opening up and checking the brushes are not sticking or dirty. If this doesnt fix it the last alternator I bought came from Hutt City Auto parts At the time it was the best deal but 2 or 3 years ago. Worth doing a ring round first as they are not cheap

Hey Guys sorry to jump in but I was hoping for a bit of help with mine
My battery, fuel filter and fuel light occasionally come on and stay on for a few seconds after submerging the alternator in river crossings
I never payed to much attention as its normally over in a few seconds.

This weekend I dunked into a mudhole that was a bit deeper then expected and the lights came on and stayed on for few minutes
Shortly afterwards after a fairly wide river crossing they came on and stayed on, so my alternator had stopped charging..
I kept driving till I'd used up all the juice in the battery and the car died..
Came back in morning with freshly charged battery and hooked it up, drove it for about 15k and the lights flicked off so she started charging again..
Has been fine since..
So I'm thinking the bushes are either dirty or worn? would you agree? are they easy to replace?

Cheers for you help..

Damien

I say your very lucky! sounds like dirt in your alt bushes or armature. I can't say how easy they are to rebuild as I have an Isuzu truck one in my Mu but they are ment to be rebuild-able. It is a wonder you didn't short the relay. They usually cook when the alt shorts.

maybe
The lights will go off for 2 reasons
First one is good which is that the alternator has started charging again. As it was water and mud that stopped it this is the most likely cause with the mud keeping it wet for longer. A check with a multi meter will confirm. There is still a high chance of mud being in there causing extra wear on the brushes so it would be wise to strip and clean.
Second not so good is the charge relay has blown. This will blow if the regulator blows in the alternator

I felt pretty lucky when they did go out I just admit, as I was up the west coast and was not looking forward to the drive home with no charge..
So I'll take it off tomorrow night if I get a chance and have a look.. see if I can clean it out a bit.. guess I'll be able to tell if the bushes are worn then..
I'm guessing there is nothing there that I wont be able to get back together again...

getting wet will cause the light to come on They should always go out within a minute of the water draining. Mud can do the same thing but is abrasive and can hold water. The water may of washed it out and in the prosess coated the slip rings. This may of self cleaned or may not of done. If you leave it it might be ok but also it might do the same thing next time it gets wet. Practice makes getting the alternator out easy

Thats good to hear.. think I need practice then..
took a look at it earlier.. couldn't decide what was the least painful way to remove it so I opted for tightening a wheel bearing and fixing my seat instead..
thought alternator could wait till weekend when I have more time :)

I went for the radiator out option (also battery) as I needed to inspect fan damage to rad a little further.. seems to be not too bad so took off the spacer between fan and waterpump to pull it back off the rad a bit and flushed and re filled cooling system while I was there.. lots of brown sludge!!

I got the alternator out and couldn't see any damage on it I looked at taking it apart to find bushes but couldn't work out how to, I undid the 4 long screws clamping it together and gave it a little pressure but it didn't feel like it wanted to part.. I didn't want to give it too much and break something!

Also when I re installed the alternator I tightened the belt so it was tight enough so I could just turn the belt 90 degrees on itself no more..
but its now screeching a tiny bit pulling away when cold.. anyone know a good way of setting correct tension?

do it up as tight as you can, as you know they have to be tight, also have to remove vaccum pump and the power nut and small nut on the back to get it apart

charge relays are blue or brown. All the others should be black

im having similar problems.
Dash lights came on during the way home from work, gauge showin under 12volts.
Put the charge relay out of MU into the wizard as it was very hot, now the motor turns over (qlenty of power) but wont fire.
Ive put the battery on the charger overnite.
Pulled the discharge hose off the fuel filter & theres plenty of fuel.
Also to add the alternator & battery are just over a year old...

Its happening again...
The charge relay in the fuse box (engine bay) is very, very hot.
Are charge relays different internally then normal 5 pin relays? or is it a Myth?
I cant find any info googleing them.....

they are voltage sensing. Inside there be black magic that doesnt matter. Blue or brown dont know the difference.

Does the relay in question (blue or brown) actually affect the ability of the system to charge the battery or does it just control/trigger the charge warning light?
