crazy temp gauge

Postby B8MYHK » Wed Sep 23, 2009 9:13 pm

Hi Guys
My temp gauge is jumping all over the place. Obviously a short somewhere as the engine is fine. (93 3.1 turbo).
Turn ignition on and the gauge flies straight to hot, then when running it is all over the show up down round and around (bit like the All Blacks). Which unit is the sender as there appears to be two of them sitting in the housing just behind the rad. Anybody got a picture showing this?
Cheers

There is three sensors in there 2 on top and 1 underneath. Just above the fan belt in this pic.

I would like to know what they all are for as I have to find the temp gauge 1 as well.

And what one is the EGR? would be a good easy place for a thermoswitch for a fan setup

If two of 4 sensors are EGR and Quick Warm Up, then most of us would be able to remove or re-use 2 these threads for other applications.

From previos posts and my own experience with the glow plug system this is what i've got:

Image
1) ?
2) Glow plug sensor
3) ?
4) Temp gauge sensor

Can anyone fill in the blanks? I've looked all through my 4JB1T manual and can't find anything more.

I think that the 3 sensors are all used for the glow, quick warm up and EGR

Am I right in thinking that sensor number 3 (as in picture above) would be for the EGR system?
And therefore a good place for a thermoswitch?

I think I've seen/heard that number 1 is for the ECU/engine temp and needs to be left there?

Can anyone confirm or shed any more light on these?

Cheers, Andy.

They are all temp sensors and I had all five wires melt into 1 big mess and fuse together. I have been running like that for a few months now with no worries untill they short out to the block. Then its was replace the fuse and shift things to look lyke i new what I was doing and it went again for a while. 8-)

Got it fixed now as per another thread.

I never did find out what each one is actully for.....

well i can confirm that no.1 in the pic must have something to do with plugs or ignition because when i bought my MU they had been temted in with screws and one day i ripped tem out by accident and the car would crank but not start..i soldered the wires back in and fired up first go..
Yeah tar thanks that'll be great..!

Yea my controller is buggered, the light just flashes once when you turn the key on and goes off, you don't really need glow plugs anyway lol I way going to wire them up2 a switch from the quick warm up system and a relay
