Unless your a bit low on voltage the "glow time" for a 2.8 is quite short.

Glow plug tim on the 2.8 is 0.5 sec above 5C and 30 sec below that.
The sensor that controls this also advances the timing when cold. Result is that at 6C the car starts like a pig and smokes terribly for the first minute or so but at 4C it starts brilliantly no smoke but knocks something wicked the first time you touch the throttle.
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them
